Job summary

NY Highways, based in Brompton-on-Swale, North Yorkshire, is looking for a Highways Operative to join a close-knit local team. This entry-level role offers full training, the opportunity to earn while you learn, and a long-term career path in highways maintenance.

You will help maintain the local highway network, assist with drainage and general site works, and support winter maintenance activities. PPE and training are provided from day one.

Looking for secure, practical work where no two days are the same? NY Highways is looking for a Highways Operative to join our close-knit local team based in Brompton-on-Swale, near Richmond, working in the heart of North Yorkshire.

This is a great opportunity to join the business at an entry level, receive full training and qualifications and progress your career within highways maintenance.

What you’ll be doing

As part of a supportive, experienced team, you’ll help maintain and improve the local highway network, carrying out a wide range of routine and seasonal works, including:

• General highway maintenance such as site clearance, verge works and sign cleaning
• Excavating holes and trenches and assisting with drainage and minor repairs
• Supporting traffic management and safe working practices on site
• Operating highways plant, tools and equipment (full training provided)
• Using handheld devices to record work and defects
• Supporting winter maintenance activities, including snow clearance and gritting operations

You’ll also take part in an out‑of‑hours call‑out rota for emergencies and potentially winter maintenance. This is a hands‑on, outdoor role, working in all weathers. Full PPE and outdoor clothing is provided.

Experience as a labourer, groundworker, construction operative, highways operative, maintenance operative or similar role would be beneficial but is not essential. If you've worked in construction, agriculture, grounds maintenance or any other practical environment, we'd love to hear from you.

Full training, PPE and support will be provided.
