We are looking for a Healthcare Underwriter to be based in our London team.

Position Summary

Under broad supervision, support the execution of the Healthcare business plan by supporting the underwriting team, focusing on developing underwriting skills and technical knowledge. Assist in managing existing accounts and identifying new business opportunities. Works within limited authority on assignments of moderate technical complexity, utilizing underwriting policies, guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Review applications and financial requirements for risks requiring technical underwriting skills.
  • Determine acceptability of risk according to company guidelines and standards.
  • Handle renewals and write new business within underwriting authority to contribute to business plan achievement.
  • Prepare quotations and respond to queries from Brokers and internal/external contacts, escalating issues as necessary.
  • Manage referrals on Affinity and Delegated business, liaising with coverholders/brokers, Underwriting Manager, and actuaries.
  • Work on both Company and Lloyd’s platforms with regional and London brokers.
  • Build relationships with brokers to achieve distribution targets.
  • Identify new business and cross-selling opportunities with brokers and underwriters.
  • Communicate underwriting decisions in writing and verbally to ensure clarity.
  • Assist in preparing the business plan and other required documents/information.
  • Accurately record policy information and maintain syndicate records and files.
  • Prepare reports on figures and statistics for the team.
  • Support business monitoring and control as directed.
  • Coordinate with Underwriting Assistants and Admin Support Teams.
  • Manage Broker and Coverholder referrals within SLAs.
  • Update core reports regularly for the Healthcare Team.
  • Participate in broker and client meetings with Underwriters.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Stay informed on state/territory issues, regulations, and trends.
  • Work with senior underwriters on risks exceeding authority or requiring special handling.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry practices.
  • Developing technical expertise and negotiation skills.
  • Understanding of business objectives and market dynamics.
  • Interest or qualification in Healthcare preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

  • Understanding of risk, pricing, contract wording, and claims analysis.
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound decisions.
