Job description

We are looking for a Healthcare Underwriter to be based in our London team.

Position Summary

Under broad supervision, support the execution of the Healthcare business plan by supporting the underwriting team, focused on developing underwriting skills and technical knowledge whilst helping to manage existing accounts and identifying new business opportunities. Works within limited authority on assignments of moderate technical complexity.Utilises underwriting policies and guidelines, rating manual rules and insurance laws and regulations.

Key Responsibilities

Reviews applications and financial requirements for risks requiring technical underwriting skills.

Determines acceptability of risk in accordance with company guidelines and standards.

  • Contribute to business plan achievement by handling renewals and writing new business within underwriting authority.
  • Prepares quotations and answers questions from Brokers, internal and external contacts and escalates issues as necessary.
  • Manages referrals on Affinity and Delegated business, liaising with the coverholder/broker partner and also with the Underwriting Manager and actuaries on Affinity reviews and product and rate changes
  • Work on both Company and Lloyd’s Platforms and with both Regional and London Brokers.
  • Establish and build upon relationships with brokers and work with specific broker partners to achieve distribution targets
  • Working with brokers and underwriters to identify new business and cross sell opportunities.
  • Prepares written communications on adverse underwriting decisions, rate appeals, underwriting requirements, status and declinations. Where appropriate, verbally notifies Brokers of decisions in order to ensure clear understanding of the decision.
  • Support the preparation of the business plan and any other document/ information as required.
  • Ensure accurate entry of policy aggregate information onto the relevant software and spreadsheets, as required. Ensure the syndicate records and files are maintained and up to date. Validate USMs and SCMs on a daily basis.
  • Prepare and report figures and statistics for the business unit or team account.
  • Support the monitoring and control of the business, as directed by Underwriters
  • Liaise with the Underwriting Assistants Team and Admin Support Team
  • Manage Broker and Coverholder referrals within the Team SLAs
  • Regularly and accurately update core reports for the Healthcare Team
  • Prepare for and attend broker and client meetings with Underwriters
  • Comply with all applicable legal and regulatory requirements and ensure, at a level appropriate to the position, that appropriate measures are in place to ensure this compliance
  • Maintains current knowledge on state/territory issues, regulations and trends.
  • Work with more senior underwriters or management on risks exceeding authority level or requiring special handling.
  • May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge & Abilities

Knowledge of underwriting and insurance industry theories and practices.

  • Developing an understanding of business objectives and the market in which we operate
  • Intellectual curiosity and interest in Healthcare (qualification or previous experience preferable)
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to effectively interact with peer level CNA internal and external business partners.

  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Developing an understanding and analysis of risk, pricing, contract wordings and claims
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and make sound business decisions effectively.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite as well as other business-related software.
