Job summary

Associated British Ports (ABP) is seeking a senior Learning & Development leader to unify and drive all elements of technical training across safety, engineering, marine and operational spaces. You will design and deliver training that ensures regulatory compliance, builds competency, and reduces risk, while leading a high‑performing team and leveraging learning technologies.

Qualifications

• Proven track record of building and delivering technical and/or health and safety training in a complex, safety‑critical or operational environment.
• Strong knowledge of health and safety legislation, compliance and accreditation requirements for safety‑critical and equipment‑operation training.
• Experience developing technical competency frameworks and assessing competence in technical functions.
• Experience deploying learning technology and systems (e.g. LMS, digital learning) to support scalable training delivery.
• Strong stakeholder and project management skills to drive value across a matrixed, technical organisation.
• Proven track record of leading and growing a high‑performing team.
• Desirable: NEBOSH and/or L&D / CIPD qualifications.

Responsibilities

• Lead the organisation's technical training strategy across health & safety, engineering, marine, and plant operations.
• Develop training programmes that build capability, support compliance, and reduce operational risk.
• Oversee competency frameworks, assessments, and accreditation requirements across technical disciplines.
• Drive the use of learning technologies and innovative training solutions to enhance engagement and effectiveness.
• Ensure technical training meets regulatory, safety, and business standards with strong governance and audit readiness.
• Lead and develop a high‑performing technical training team, delivering against strategic priorities.
• Monitor performance, compliance and competence data to drive continuous improvement.
