The Role

Become a Graduate Assistant at Walhampton

We are looking for enthusiastic Graduate Assistants to join our vibrant team and fully immerse themselves in the day-to-day life of our school, including Boarding.

The role of a Graduate Assistant is both challenging and rewarding. As a Graduate Assistant at Walhampton, you will have the unique opportunity to work alongside our subject teachers, set up experiments and practical lessons, manage resources, and lead on art or technology projects. You will also play a vital role in our extensive extra-curricular programme, helping to organise and deliver exciting activities that inspire our students. Successful candidates must therefore be flexible, hard-working, and enthusiastic.

This varied and fulfilling role is perfect for current undergraduates or recent graduates who are considering a career in teaching or wishing to gain experience working with young people in a school setting. Walhampton provides a supportive environment where Graduate Assistants can develop their skills, contribute to the whole school community, and gain valuable experience in a variety of areas. We are also open to tailoring responsibilities to accommodate individual interests and strengths that align with the needs of our pupils.

On-site accommodation is available during term time. A small contribution toward utilities is required, but there is no rental charge for accommodation or food during term time. We also welcome applications from candidates who prefer to live in the surrounding area.

Hours will be term-time, including some evenings and weekends on a rota, as well as school trips and expeditions, which may occasionally fall over weekends.

This is a fantastic opportunity to spend a year in an innovative school that puts great emphasis on creativity, rigour, and developing our staff.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support and encourage pupils in your area of specialism.
  • Collaborate with teachers to prepare exciting lessons and projects, as well as organising resources.
  • Manage specialist equipment such as robots, 3D printers or our extensive art resources.
  • Help core staff in delivering lessons and organising extra-curricular events.
  • Test and develop new educational ideas.
  • Inspire children through activities at lunch or break times.
  • Promote the general wellbeing of the children.
  • Set an excellent example of behaviour, honesty, integrity and manners at all times.
  • Demonstrate hard work, reliability and punctuality.
  • Attend to matters promptly, passing relevant information to other members of staff in a timely manner.
  • Attend school functions when required.
  • Escort children on public transport, including train journeys to and from London, as well as ferry trips to and from the Isle of Wight.
What We're Looking For:
  • Current undergraduates or recent graduates with a relevant degree.
  • High expectations for pupils’ learning, achievement and behaviour.
  • Strong organisational skills and reliability.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and try new things.
  • Experience or interest in using specialist equipment like 3D printers and workshop tools.
  • Passion for making a difference in young people’s lives.
  • Creative, friendly and approachable personality.

At Walhampton, we value creativity, rigour, and the professional growth of our staff. We believe in fostering a collaborative environment where new ideas are tested and developed. If you have a passion for working with young people and are excited about contributing to a supportive and forward-thinking community, we’d love to hear from you.
