The team’s role includes setting strategy and direction for Digital’s capability; being the Subject Matter Experts (SME) and Single Point of contact (SPOC) for areas including talent, skills and diversity; and ensuring we have the right foundations, products, services and activity for Digital to have the best capability for the short and long term.

We build and own the Capability Strategy on behalf of the organisation, which defines how we optimise our investment and decisions regarding our people across the employee lifecycle and ensuring a future proofed and inclusive organisation.

In parallel to maintaining the strategy, we drive specific activity, products and initiatives including Career Pathways; Careers Toolbox; Job Role Catalogue and Professionalisation.

The roles we have available at this time are based in the Digital hub at Benton Park View, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, where the majority of the Capability Strategy team are based.

Job description & responsibilities
  • Assist with basic research and information gathering on capability needs, workforce trends, or process improvements.
  • Maintain accurate records, trackers, and project documentation in line with agreed formats.
  • Provide logistical support for meetings, events, workshops, and stakeholder sessions.
  • Gather data from set sources to contribute to simple reports or presentations.
  • Assist in preparing meeting agendas, briefing packs, and follow-up notes.
  • Help coordinate small-scale activities such as interview scheduling, training sessions, or data collation.
  • Support internal communications by sharing approved messages or updates.
  • Observe and learn from colleagues on delivery processes, planning methods, and stakeholder interactions.
  • Complete allocated tasks under supervision, escalating risks or issues promptly.

However, we don’t expect you to have all of the skills and experience needed to do the job when you first join us!

You will not normally be working alone, but as part of a team. This team will problem-solve, work together, and support each other. The team will also support you as you learn the job, and give you opportunities to try new work and learn new skills as your confidence and knowledge develops over time.

We have plenty of experience in hiring people with no previous DWP experience or no IT skills, and training and supporting them to be effective and valued members of our team. We have lots of materials ready for you, and lots of experienced people on hand to support you.
