Job summary

Bristol City Council is seeking an experienced Fire Safety Advisor to join the Building Practice Team in Corporate Landlord Services. You will provide specialist fire safety guidance across a diverse property portfolio and lead audits, risk assessments and compliance reviews to protect staff and the public.

The role supports policy development, safety governance and training, fostering a proactive fire safety culture throughout the organisation. Hybrid working is available.

Help shape and improve fire safety standards across one of the most diverse local authority property portfolios in the UK.

We're looking for an experienced and knowledgeable Fire Safety Advisor to join our Building Practice Team within Corporate Landlord Services, where you'll play a vital role in protecting employees, residents, visitors and service users across Bristol. Drawing on specialist fire safety expertise, the role supports the council in meeting its statutory responsibilities and maintaining high standards of compliance across a varied property estate.

About the Role

As our Fire Safety Advisor, you will provide specialist advice and guidance to managers, responsible persons, property professionals and contractors on all aspects of fire safety. You'll undertake fire safety audits, inspections and technical fire risk assessments, monitor compliance with fire safety legislation, review performance, and support the continual improvement of fire safety arrangements across the council's estate. You'll also contribute to training, policy development and safety governance activities, helping to embed a positive fire safety culture throughout the organisation.

What do I need to have?

• Strong knowledge of fire safety legislation, compliance requirements and industry best practice.
• Experience of undertaking fire safety audits, inspections, risk assessments and compliance reviews.
• The ability to interpret and apply technical fire safety information in practical environments.
• Excellent communication and influencing skills, with the confidence to advise managers, contractors and senior stakeholders.
• Strong organisational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities across a large and varied property portfolio.
• Membership of a recognised fire safety professional institution such as IFSM or IFE, with relevant post-qualification experience.

We're also looking for someone who is proactive, analytical, solutions-focused and committed to improving safety outcomes. You'll be collaborative in your approach, have excellent attention to detail and be confident building positive working relationships across a complex organisation.
