Greenwell Gleeson Ltd is recruiting a Financial Controller to join a successful SME based in Tamworth. This hands-on role manages the day-to-day finance function, delivering accurate reporting and commercial insight to the senior leadership team.

The successful candidate will lead a small finance team, strengthen processes and controls, and support growth with robust financial governance and timely year-end activities.

Qualifications

• Qualified, part-qualified or qualified by experience accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA).
• Experience in a Financial Controller or Finance Manager role within an SME.
• Strong management accounting and financial control capability.
• Commercial mindset with ability to translate financial data into insights.
• Hands-on approach while leading a small finance team.

Responsibilities

• Take ownership of monthly management accounts including P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and variance analysis.
• Manage month-end and year-end close processes with timely reporting.
• Lead budgeting, forecasting and cash flow management, highlighting risks and opportunities.
• Oversee day-to-day finance functions: purchase and sales ledgers, credit control and payroll.
• Develop a small finance team and ensure deadlines are met.
• Maintain robust balance sheet reconciliations and financial controls.
• Produce meaningful management information and KPIs for Directors.
• Partner with operational teams to analyse margins, costs, profitability and performance.
• Manage working capital and improvements in cash collection and supplier management.
• Coordinate year-end audit and liaise with external accountants and advisers.
• Ensure VAT, tax and statutory reporting compliance.
• Identify opportunities to improve finance systems and processes.
• Support Directors with ad hoc commercial analysis and strategic projects.

This is a hands-on role with responsibility for the day-to-day finance function, providing accurate financial reporting and commercial insight to the senior leadership team. The successful candidate will manage a small finance team while helping to strengthen processes, controls and reporting as the business continues to develop.

Key Responsibilities

• Take ownership of the monthly management accounts, including P&L, balance sheet, cash flow and variance analysis.

About You

• Qualified, part-qualified or qualified by experience accountant (ACA/ACCA/CIMA).

• Previous experience in a Financial Controller, Finance Manager or similar role within an SME environment.

• Strong management accounting and financial control experience.

• Commercially minded with the ability to turn financial information into useful business insight.

• Comfortable operating in a hands-on role while managing and developing a small team.

• Strong Excel and finance systems experience.

• Confident communicator capable of working closely with Directors and non-finance stakeholders.

• Proactive approach with a track record of improving processes, controls and reporting.
