Job summary

The University of Derby is seeking a skilled Fashion Technical Adviser to join the Technical Services team on a part-time, 18.5 hours per week, two-year fixed-term contract. You will provide expert technical support across fashion programmes, specialising in garment construction, pattern cutting and manufacturing methods.

You will demonstrate equipment, maintain facilities, support learning, and work with staff and students to deliver industry-standard practice while ensuring health and safety

Qualifications

• Experience in garment construction, pattern cutting, and manufacturing processes.
• Hands-on experience with industrial sewing machinery and pressing equipment.
• Experience supporting practical workshop environments in education or industry.

Responsibilities

• Provide in-class technical support and demonstrate garment construction, pattern cutting, and manufacturing processes.
• Demonstrate safe and effective use of specialist equipment including industrial sewing machines and pressing equipment.
• Diagnose routine technical issues and advise on suitable construction methods.
• Prepare and set up workshop spaces, equipment and materials for teaching activities.
• Organise and maintain specialist equipment and workshop areas; liaise over shared facilities.
• Keep records of consumables, stock, and assets; assist with procurement as needed.
• Supervise and train new staff and students in facility use; promote health and safety compliance.
• Support student projects and competitions; contribute to teaching and learning outcomes.
