Job description

We're looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Infrastructure Delivery team, supporting the delivery of the North West London Upgrade, a major transmission programme spanning Sundon, Elstree and St John's Wood. The programme includes new substations, overhead line modifications and the installation of an additional transmission cable, helping to strengthen the network and support future energy demand across London.

As Engineering Manager, you'll lead the engineering and design integration of these projects, acting as the key interface between project teams, design assurance functions and multiple delivery contractors. Working across the full project lifecycle, you'll ensure designs are coordinated, risks are managed, engineering standards are met, and complex stakeholder relationships are successfully navigated.

This is a highly visible role where you'll bring together five external contractors, multiple engineering disciplines and key internal stakeholders to deliver nationally significant infrastructure safely, efficiently and collaboratively.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead engineering and design management throughout project development and construction, ensuring compliance with National Grid standards and governance requirements.
  • Drive engineering integration across substations, overhead lines, cable systems and associated infrastructure, identifying and resolving technical interfaces and design clashes.
  • Act as the primary engineering interface between project managers, contractors, design assurance teams and stakeholders.
  • Review and challenge contractor designs, providing assurance and supporting effective technical decision-making.
  • Lead design reviews, engineering forums and stakeholder meetings to ensure alignment across delivery partners.
  • Manage engineering risks, technical queries, design deviations and package interfaces.
  • Lead CDM, design risk management and Principal Designer engagement to support safe and compliant delivery.
  • Promote innovation, digital engineering and value engineering opportunities across the programme.
  • Provide engineering leadership, creating an environment where teams can perform at their best.

Your time will be split between the Euston project office and sites across Northwest London and the wider project corridor towards Watford, with regular engagement across the Infrastructure Delivery business.

About You

You'll be an experienced engineering leader with a track record of delivering complex infrastructure projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams and contractors. You'll be comfortable influencing stakeholders, managing competing priorities and driving engineering excellence across large-scale programmes.

What You'll Bring
  • Degree, HNC, HND or equivalent qualification in an engineering discipline.
  • Experience in engineering management, design management or engineering assurance on major infrastructure projects.
  • Experience leading engineering teams and managing contractor organisations.
  • Strong understanding of engineering governance, CDM regulations, health and safety requirements and risk management.
  • Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder and contractor interfaces.
  • Professional membership of a recognised engineering institution, with Chartered Engineer status desirable.
  • Experience within electricity transmission or high‑voltage infrastructure is preferred, although candidates from utilities, rail, civil engineering or other major infrastructure sectors will also be considered.
What's in it for you?
  • Salary of £73,000 - £81,000 dependent on experience and capability
  • Company car
  • Annual Performance Based Bonus up to 30% of your base salary
  • 28 days annual leave plus eight statutory days, and the option to buy additional or sell holiday days
  • Generous contributory pension scheme – we will double‑match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave – so long as it’s relevant to your role
  • Access to several flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few
  • Family care benefits including a back‑up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days)
  • Access to numerous apps which support health, fitness and wellbeing
