Job summary

Teaching Personnel is recruiting for a Behaviour & Pastoral Support Mentor to join a specialist SEMH secondary school in the Trafford area. The role focuses on supporting pupils aged 11-16 with SEMH needs, including anxiety and challenging behaviour, to build confidence and resilience.

You’ll work 1:1 and in small groups, collaborate with teachers and external agencies, and help create a safe, nurturing learning environment while promoting positive behavioural change.

Qualifications

• Experience working with young people displaying challenging behaviour or additional needs.
• Calm, patient, and resilient approach.
• Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries while building trust.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting welfare of children.
• Experience in education, youth work, coaching, mentoring, residential care, or similar sectors.
• Relevant qualifications are desirable but not essential.

Responsibilities

• Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils needing emotional and behavioural support.
• Provide 1:1 and small-group interventions on wellbeing, confidence, social skills, and regulation.
• Support students inside and outside the classroom to maximise engagement with learning.
• Implement behaviour support strategies and de-escalation techniques.
• Encourage attendance and participation throughout the school day.
• Work with teaching staff, pastoral teams, therapists, and external agencies.
• Act as a positive role model fostering resilience and personal growth.
• Monitor progress and contribute to support plans and targets.
• Help create a safe, structured learning environment.
