Job summary

Northumbria Police is recruiting an Emergency Contact Handler apprentice to become the first point of contact in emergencies. You will learn to gather information from callers, input data into police IT systems, and assess urgency while maintaining a calm, professional manner.

You will undergo a structured apprenticeship with on-the-job training and mentoring, leading to a nationally recognised certificate in emergency contact handling upon successful completion.

Qualifications

• No formal qualifications are required.
• Typing, listening and written communication assessment will form part of the selection process.
• Under 19 at programme start must hold Level 2 English and Maths (GCSE C/4+ or equivalent).

Responsibilities

• Gather information from callers using strong communication and record key messages professionally.
• Input data into police IT systems and consult force databases to support frontline officers.
• Assess vulnerability and provide high-quality service to victims and customers.
• Handle 999 and 101 calls plus digital platform contacts; support flexible hours as needed.
