Job summary

Bath Spa University in Bath, Somerset, is seeking an Electrical Technician to maintain and improve electrical infrastructure across the estate. The role covers fault finding, testing, installations, and emergency response to ensure a safe environment for students and staff.

Grade 6, full-time, with a £2k per annum High Voltage Appointed Person Responsibility Allowance when appropriately qualified. Full training provided to obtain required qualification.

Qualifications

  • Electrical qualification in a recognized discipline.
  • Experience testing fixed electrical installations.
  • Experience in a maintenance environment.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out planned and reactive electrical maintenance across University properties.
  • Undertake electrical testing and inspection per BS7671 requirements.
  • Maintain and test emergency lighting, fire alarm and generator systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical faults, control systems, motors, pumps and HVAC-related equipment.
  • Carry out electrical installations, modifications and upgrades.
  • Supervise and coordinate specialist contractors working on University sites.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergencies to minimise disruption.
  • Ensure all works follow health and safety requirements and safe systems of work.

Description

Join Bath Spa University's Estates team and play a vital role in maintaining and improving the electrical infrastructure across our diverse academic and residential estate. This hands-on role offers a varied workload, from fault finding and testing to installations and emergency response, helping ensure a safe and reliable environment for students and staff.

(This is a full time, Grade 6 role, plus £2k per annum High Voltage Appointed Person Responsibility Allowance payable where appropriately qualified. Full training will be provided to obtain the necessary qualification if required.)

About the Role
  • Carry out planned and reactive electrical maintenance across University properties.
  • Undertake electrical testing and inspection in accordance with BS7671 requirements.
  • Maintain and test emergency lighting, fire alarm and generator systems.
  • Diagnose and repair electrical faults, control systems, motors, pumps and HVAC-related equipment.
  • Carry out electrical installations, modifications and upgrades.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of the University's electrical distribution infrastructure.
  • Assist with Portable Appliance Testing (PAT).
  • Supervise and coordinate specialist contractors working on University sites.
  • Support colleagues by sharing technical knowledge and best practice.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns and emergencies to minimise disruption.
  • Ensure all works are completed in accordance with health and safety requirements and safe systems of work.
  • Maintain accurate records and communicate effectively with University stakeholders regarding maintenance activities.
About You
Essential
  • Qualifications in an Electrical discipline, preferably through a trade Apprenticeship through to BTEC ONC/OND level.
  • Significant experience of testing fixed electrical installations
  • Significant recent experience working in a maintenance environment.
Desirable
  • Experience of HV systems.
  • Experience of mechanical maintenance.
  • Experience of operating and maintaining a full Building Management System

Grade 6 - Starting from £33,951, rising to £37,694 (plus £2k per annum High Voltage Appointed Person Responsibility Allowance payable where appropriately qualified. Full training will be provided to obtain the necessary qualification if required.)

The salary range shows the potential maximum pay progression in addition to any annual inflationary increase to your pay. Please note that our default position is to appoint into the lower end of the range, unless there are exceptional circumstances.
