Job summary

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust seeks a Specialist Electrical Craftsperson (Band 5) for Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The post is permanent with full-time, part-time and flexible working options.

You will install, service and repair a wide range of Estates equipment, providing technical advice and ensuring compliance with safety standards. Key duties include fault diagnosis, calibration, and repair of hospital plant such as standby generators, 3-phase and single-phase circuits,

Job overview

As well as their core specialist skill, an Electrical Craftsperson will perform work including activities which are complex and/or non-routine.

Installs, maintains, services and repairs full range of Estates services equipment

Provides technical advice to other Estates Maintenance staff and contractors to ensure compliance with safety standards and procedures

Undertakes condition surveys and evaluates inspection reports

Responsible for calibration, fault finding and repair on a wide range of engineering plant and equipment. Example; Standby generators, 3 phase and single phase electrical circuits, Heating systems, Ventilation systems (including Theatre vent) and all other associated hospital plant and equipment.

Main duties of the job

Understand, diagnose and repair faults in electrical engineering plant and equipment, to deal with new situations as they arise. Re-assemble, erect and install new work.

Understand the workings of all non-specialist and specialist electrical systems in Addenbrooke’s Hospital and associated properties. Competently deal with new or unusual complex situations as they arise.

Able to work in isolation or as part of a team to complete tasks within agreed timescales. Able to work autonomously across the Trust sites, ensuring patient, public and staff safety is paramount.

Participate in essential training required to ensure the trust is compliant with statutory regulations. Participate in personal development and on-going learning.

Provide and receive complex information regarding technical issues and safety requirements to various groups, such as staff, customers and contractors.

To liaise with engineering managerial staff regarding plant or equipment failures and to request the supply of goods and/or services as necessary.

Undertake essential repair works and general maintenance activities at the request of the Engineering Supervisor.

Following suitable site training, be able to cover for Shift Technicians in times of sickness or annual leave.

Additional training to BTEC level will be required to be able to maintain, fault find and carry out repairs to the following specialist plant and equipment:

Competent person LV systems, Confined spaces and ventilation.

  • BTEC HNC / HND / Approved Apprenticeship, City and Guilds or NVQ III Technicians Certificate or equivalent qualification in relevant topic
  • Qualification and experience in Fire Alarms, Control Systems or Mechanical / Motor Con BTEC or City and Guilds in Medical Gas Pipeline and Vacuum Systems and Btec or City and Guilds in Decontamination Equipment and Sterilisation
  • Electrical or Mechanical Testing and Inspection
Experience
  • Able to make workload assessments and allocation
  • Experience of working in an industrial environment; Electrical / Mechanical Services Systems Maintenance
  • Comprehensive post apprenticeship experience in a Hospital maintenance environment
