Job summary

Torbay Hospital in Torbay is seeking a Band 6 Sister/Charge Nurse to lead the Emergency Department team. You will oversee patient flow, coordinate shifts, and work with a multidisciplinary team to maintain safe, high-quality care.

The role emphasizes leadership, communication, and development of staff within a well-established education team. You will contribute to service improvement and patient safety in a dynamic ED setting.

Qualifications

• Comprehensive experience in Emergency Medicine or ED nursing.
• Experience coordinating shifts and leading nursing teams.
• Proven leadership and decision-making under shift pressure.

Responsibilities

• Oversee flow in the Emergency Department using specialist Emergency Nursing knowledge to provide clinical and professional leadership to the nursing team.
• Ensure effective communication is maintained at department level
• Support junior colleagues during the shift and as a team leader
• Liaise with the wider MDT and external agencies to maintain patient flow and safety
• Make decisions regarding clinical and personnel issues on a shift-by-shift basis
• Help develop the service and team to ensure high quality care is delivered
• Deliver on requests made by departmental Matron
• Work with the Matron and follow Trust policies to ensure department safety
• Nursing team includes Adult and Paediatric qualified nurses and works with Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Paramedic Practitioners
