Job description

Due to ongoing business growth, and a desire to increase the number of early careers roles available with the rail sector, we are looking for a self-motivated and numerically minded finance graduate to join us from September 2025.

Who are we?

We are Rail People. Since our founding in 1994 we have been helping to modernise and improve UK rail to meet the needs of today’s passengers. We have invested more than £1.5 billion in rolling stock and innovation projects in the last ten years to become the UK’s largest rolling stock leasing company.

Our purpose is to serve the rail industry by bringing private investment into rail assets innovatively and sustainably throughout their lifecycle. Our culture of innovation, collaboration and commitment to excellence drives us to be a company that is valued by our customers and makes us the people that the rail industry most wants to work with.

We invest in small and medium businesses who drive our innovation in new technologies. From battery and hybrid powered traction systems to 3D printed parts and high-definition cameras on our assets. Our long-term outlook means we can support skilled jobs across the sector, from coast to coast, across the whole country.

We will continue to reimagine our investments, to work with the talented people in our industry and to engineer a brighter, greener, more cost-effective future for the railway in the United Kingdom. Together, we are creating an environment where people can enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

Angel Trains. Rail People, Real Expertise.

About the role:

The successful candidates will enrol on an intensive 3-year Level 7 Accountancy Professional apprenticeship scheme, equivalent to a master’s degree. Throughout the scheme you will complete numerous placements with our different internal finance functions ranging from accounts payable, tax and accounting to treasury and financial modelling. You will also spend 20% of your time with a dedicated training provider (BPP) to learn specialised technical knowledge. Successful completion of the scheme will lead to you taking up a substantive role within our finance department.

As an Authorised Training Employer this scheme is accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England & Wales (ICAEW) and leads you to gaining your Associate Chartered Accountant qualification. Throughout the three years you will be supported by experienced professionals within the business, who will help guide your pathway towards professional registration and accreditation as a Chartered Accountant.

What will you be doing?

Due to the nature of the scheme objectives and responsibilities will vary considerably between all placements but your primary responsibility will be to rotate through the different placements whilst gaining practical experience and skills. Each placement is specifically tailored to meet the unique requirements of individual graduates and give a clear overview of each of our financial functions. Clear responsibilities are outlined before the commencement of each placement, aligning with various competency requirements defined by the ICAEW.

What do we need from you?

  • Expected or achieved graduation by 2025 with a degree in Accounting & Finance, Maths or Economics. (Other relevant subject areas may be considered on a case-by-case basis).
  • High levels of numeracy, attention to detail and data manipulation/analytics skills.
  • Flexible, innovative and agile approaches to problem solving, with a positive ‘can do’ attitude.
  • Desire to take responsibility for personal and professional development.
  • Strong exposure to and experience with MS Excel is also highly desirable.

Why choose us?

As an employer we ask that all our employees follow and showcase five simple values; that we are:

  • People People
  • Future Forward
  • Always Accountable
  • Better Together
  • Problem Solvers

Alongside these values we also believe our role as an employer is to empower our workforce to make self-sufficient, informed choices, giving them new experiences and helping to develop their careers.

We recognise that our people are our greatest asset at Angel trains, and this is why we invest significantly in both their professional and personal development. We have been accredited with Investors in People & Wellbeing Platinum Awards and we’ve tailored our competitive benefits offering to include:

  • Generous holiday allowance and employer pension contributions.
  • Health Insurance.
  • A range of discounted offers and benefits e.g. season ticket loans to cycle to work schemes.
  • Perkbox – our discounted online shopping site.
  • A salary sacrifice Electric Vehicle benefit scheme.
  • Family-friendly and flexible working policies.

Your physical and mental wellbeing matters to us and to support you during your career we also offer an Employee Assistance Programme, and a dedicated team of volunteer Mental Health First Aiders.

It’s a great place to work with a modern offices in London & Derby (but with hybrid working), hugely engaged colleagues, and external recognition as a “World Class Workplace”.
