Job summary

Places for People is seeking a Data Architect to lead the design and governance of our data platform within the Data and Platform Engineering team in the UK. The role drives decentralisation through data mesh principles and ensures interoperable, trusted data products across the organisation.

You will mentor engineers, collaborate with principal data engineers, and help shape the data roadmap while upholding enterprise standards and best practices.

Qualifications

• Experience as a Data Solutions Architect or similar role.
• Strong knowledge of Google BigQuery platform.
• Expertise in data platform architecture, configuration, and optimisation with focus on MPP databases like BigQuery.
• Knowledge of data mesh principles, data warehousing concepts, and ETL/ELT processes.
• Excellent problem solving and analytical skills with ability to explain solutions clearly.

Responsibilities

• Data Platform Architecture Design: oversee the design of the data platform to meet current and future needs.
• Architectural Documentation: produce clear architectural docs and diagrams.
• Domain-Oriented Ownership: embed a Data as a Product mindset across development.
• Tool and Service Evaluation: assess and recommend tools, infrastructure and services.
• Architectural Standards: establish standards, reference architectures and best practices.
• Governance: design solutions with governance, security and quality in mind.
• Data Product Design Standards: ensure data products are discoverable, interoperable and trustworthy.
• Data Pipeline Design: design robust batch, event-driven and streaming pipelines.
• Operational Considerations: address security, scalability, performance, observability and UX.
