Job description

The TGW Retrofit team are looking for an experienced controls engineer to join the department as a Lead Commissioning Engineer.

You will be working closely with the controls project manager to develop and provide control system functions for retrofit projects. These projects can range in value up to a few million pounds and really need an experienced controls engineer to take the reins and ensure the engineering is completed on time and to spec.

You’ll be working on roles across Northern Europe and will likely enjoy the rush of working on multiple smaller projects vs one large one at a time.

WHAT YOULL BE HANDLING
  • To understand design requirements and undertake mathematical analysis where necessary to produce concept designs for materials handling machines. This process will involve collaboration with other departments within the business such as Sales, LTS, Realisation and System Integration Management Teams.
  • To work with systems and hardware design teams, to produce functional electro‑mechanical layouts and electrical panels. These designs may require the introduction of new technologies.
  • As a key member of a small team, there will be opportunities to carry out SYEC work and HWEC work. Training will be provided in both these disciplines.
  • Define and agree interface points and requirements with Warehouse Management System Teams.
  • Develop software concepts and PLC/HMI code using mainly but not restricted to Siemens Step 7 and Siemens TIA Portal.
  • To emulate and test PLC code where required.
  • To develop interface requirements for WCS systems, HMIs and SCADA.
  • Test, evaluate and perfect the PLC software and produce documentation and design guides so that the PLC commissioning teams can understand and implement this software.
  • Maintain revision control across PLC code libraries developed by the team and document all changes.
  • Work as part of the commissioning team on retrofit projects to ensure knowledge transfer is complete and all issues have been resolved with the newly developed PLC code.
  • Promote and steer company standards and ensure best practice is implemented in the design.
  • Good Housekeeping skills, including revision control and as‑built documentation.
  • In a smaller specialised team you will also undertake certain elements of system and hardware engineering and, at times, carry out minor project‑management duties. All training will be given as required.
WHAT YOULL NEED
Required
  • Ability to design/develop PLC code ideally using Siemens S7 (300/400) & TIA software, including complex application and bespoke interfaces.
  • Take customer/TGW requirements and produce detailed design documentation.
  • Extensive experience of commissioning and testing in an engineering/industrial environment.
  • Detailed understanding of control system hardware, networks, fieldbus and industrial drives.
Desired
  • Knowledge of functional safety programming.
  • Background in the material handling/conveyor industry or a similar industry.
  • Ability to design/develop HMI/SCADA.
  • Previous experience of working with motion control via servo drives.

We offer a very competitive base salary plus car allowance, 25 days holiday, income protection, medicash, buy and sell holiday scheme and car salary sacrifice scheme.
