Job summary

SoCode Limited is partnering with a Cambridge-area tech business to recruit a Contract Mechanical Design Engineer. You will design sub-modules and enclosures for airborne platforms, integrating with mechanical, electronics and RF teams to deliver robust, manufacturable solutions.

You will create 3D models and drawings in Creo, manage parts in Windchill, and collaborate with suppliers for rapid prototyping and production. Security clearance is a stated capability for this role.

Contract Mechanical Design Engineer – Outside IR35

Socode are partnering with a Cambridge-area technology and communications business that develops advanced electronic systems for defence, aerospace and other high-performance sectors. They’re looking to bring in a Contract Mechanical Design Engineer to design sub-modules and enclosures for integration onto an airborne platform.

This is a hands‑on design role sitting between the mechanical, electronics and RF engineering teams. You’ll take designs from concept through to manufacture and work closely with suppliers to keep turnaround fast. The work suits an experienced contractor who can get up to speed quickly.

What will you be doing?

• Designing mechanical sub-modules and enclosures for integration onto an airborne platform
• Developing aerodynamic enclosures and structures that suit the platform’s operating environment
• Packaging PCBs, harnesses and control electronics into robust mechanical assemblies
• Working with RF and electronics engineers on enclosures that house sensitive RF hardware
• Producing 3D models, assemblies and detailed drawings in Creo, managed through Windchill
• Choosing suitable materials and manufacturing methods for each part
• Working with manufacturers and suppliers to secure fast turnaround on prototype and production parts
• Supporting design reviews and helping prepare designs for build and integration

What are they looking for?

• Strong, recent experience using Creo Parametric for detailed mechanical design
• Experience working within Windchill / PDMLink
• Experience with the Creo Advanced Assembly Extension (AAX)
• Proven background in electro‑mechanical design and electronic packaging
• Good knowledge of manufacturing processes, such as machining, sheet metal, injection moulding, casting and rapid prototyping
• Confident dealing directly with suppliers and manufacturers
• Able to hold or obtain SC clearance

Nice to have

• Experience designing aerodynamic enclosures or for airborne/aerospace platforms
• Exposure to radomes, RF or microwave hardware
• EMC/RFI screening experience
• Background in defence, aerospace or other List X / secure environments
