Job summary

Arthur Bugler Primary School is seeking a dedicated Communication Support Worker with BSL Level 6 to support deaf and hearing-impaired learners in Key Stage 2 during maternity cover. The role focuses on enabling access to learning and promoting independence through British Sign Language and other communication methods.

You will work closely with teachers and families to deliver intervention programmes, adapt resources and contribute to an inclusive school environment.

Qualifications

• Minimum BSL Level 6 qualification.
• Experience supporting deaf/hearing-impaired pupils is desirable.
• Strong communication skills in sign and spoken language.

Responsibilities

• Enable hearing-impaired students to access learning in classrooms and during activities.
• Provide specialist communication support using BSL and other methods.

Salary: Thurrock Band C Point 13 - 19

£25,963.84 - £29,760.60 (actual salary per annum)

37 hours per week: Monday - Thursday 8am to 4pm; Friday 8am to 3:30pm (30 minute unpaid break)

38 weeks of the year - term time plus inset days

Start Date: 1st December 2026

Fixed Term to 30th November 2027

We are looking for an enthusiastic, skilled and dedicated Communication Support Worker to join our team and provide high-quality support for our hearing-impaired students within Key Stage 2. Working closely with teachers, families and specialist professionals, you will play a vital role in ensuring pupils can fully access learning, develop confidence and participate in every aspect of school life.

Through the use of British Sign Language (BSL) and other communication strategies, you will help break down barriers to learning, promote independence and support students both inside and outside the classroom. The role also includes delivering targeted interventions, adapting learning resources and contributing to a fully inclusive environment where every child can succeed.

The successful candidate will hold a minimum of BSL Level 6 qualification and/or use BSL as their first or primary language.

Key Responsibilities

• Champion inclusion and participation by enabling hearing-impaired students to access learning and engage fully in classroom, playground and wider school activities.
• Provide specialist communication support through British Sign Language, transcription and other appropriate communication methods.
• Adapt learning materials and resources to meet individual needs and maximise access to the curriculum.
• Deliver targeted intervention programmes that support communication, language development, confidence and academic progress.
• Support students across the school day, including lessons, assessments, educational visits, performances, sports activities and social times.
• Monitor progress and contribute to planning, maintaining accurate records and working with colleagues to develop effective support strategies.
• Work collaboratively with teachers, families and external professionals to promote positive outcomes for students.
• Engage in ongoing professional development and contribute to a culture of best practice, inclusion and continuous improvement.
