Job summary

Education Matters Group is seeking a BSL Teaching Assistant in Greenwich. The role requires a Level 2/3 BSL qualification and involves 1:1 and small-group support for students with hearing impairments within a mainstream school.

The successful candidate will use BSL to facilitate communication, help students access the curriculum, and support their academic and social development in a welcoming, inclusive environment.

Qualifications

  • Must hold Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language (BSL).
  • Experience supporting students with hearing impairments is desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students who are deaf or have hearing impairments.
  • Use British Sign Language (BSL) to support communication between students and staff.
  • Assist students in accessing the curriculum and participating in lessons.
  • Deliver targeted learning interventions and reinforce classroom learning.
  • Support students with social and emotional development.
  • Encourage student confidence, independence and engagement in school life.
  • Collaborate with teachers and the support team to meet individual needs.

BSL Teaching Assistant

Location: Greenwich

Start Date: September 2026

Contract: Full-time, Term-Time Only

Rate: £140 per day, depending on experience and qualifications

We are currently recruiting for a BSL Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming and inclusive school in Greenwich. This is an excellent opportunity for a compassionate and dedicated individual with a Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language (BSL) to support students with hearing impairments within a mainstream school setting.

The successful candidate will play an important role in ensuring students can fully access their education, communicate effectively with staff and peers, and develop both academically and socially.

The Role As a BSL Teaching Assistant, you will:
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support to students who are deaf or have hearing impairments
  • Use British Sign Language (BSL) to support communication between students and teaching staff
  • Assist students in accessing the curriculum and participating fully in lessons
  • Deliver targeted learning interventions and reinforce classroom learning
  • Support students with their social and emotional development
  • Encourage students' confidence, independence and engagement in school life
  • Work closely with teachers and the wider support team to meet individual student needs
The Ideal Candidate We are looking for someone who has:
  • A minimum Level 2 or Level 3 qualification in British Sign Language (BSL)
  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with hearing impairments
  • Strong BSL communication skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • A patient, calm and compassionate approach
  • The ability to build positive relationships with students
  • A flexible and proactive attitude
  • A genuine commitment to inclusive education and supporting every student to reach their potential
