Job summary

Coventry City Council is seeking a Commercial Gas Engineer to join its Facilities Management team in Coventry. The role is hands-on, performing planned maintenance, reactive repairs, and project-related works across Council properties, with mentoring duties for apprentices.

This is not supervisory but requires independence, adherence to safety standards, and participation in an out-of-hours rota. Gas Safe registration and ACS/City & Guilds qualifications are essential.

Qualifications

Commercial Gas Engineer

Location: Whitley Depot, Coventry
Service: Facilities Management
Rate: £30 per hour PAYE – market rate considered
Hours: Full-time, including participation in an out-of-hours/on-call rota

About the Role

Coventry City Council is looking for an experienced Commercial Gas Engineer to join its Facilities Management team.

Reporting to the Facilities M&E Manager, you will provide high-quality building services across Council properties, carrying out planned maintenance, reactive repairs, installations and project-related works.

This is a hands-on engineering position and is not a supervisory or management role, although you will be expected to support and mentor apprentices and trainees.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair commercial gas, heating, HVAC, ventilation and heat pump systems.
• Carry out fault diagnosis and reactive repairs within agreed timescales.
• Complete planned preventative maintenance (PPM) on heating and combustion systems.
• Conduct combustion testing and system evaluations to ensure safe and compliant operation.
• Install and modify associated gas, heating, hot and cold water pipework and fittings.
• Carry out general plumbing works where required and identify potential Legionella risks.
• Ensure all work complies with relevant gas safety legislation, British Standards and Approved Codes of Practice.
• Record completed works, materials and job information accurately using a computer-aided facilities management (CAFM) system.
• Provide quotations and estimates for remedial works and new projects when required.
• Communicate effectively with customers, colleagues and managers regarding works and progress.
• Maintain tools, equipment, vehicles and work areas to appropriate health and safety standards.
• Report any safety concerns or hazards promptly.
• Participate in the out-of-hours/on-call rota.
• Provide guidance and mentoring to apprentices and trainees.

Essential Requirements

• Current Gas Safe registration with relevant commercial gas competencies.
• Relevant ACS / City & Guilds or equivalent commercial gas qualifications.
• Experience working with commercial and/or industrial gas systems.
• Experience in a maintenance or similar commercial engineering environment.
• Knowledge of combustion systems, fault diagnosis and troubleshooting.
• Knowledge of gas safety, emissions and relevant regulatory requirements.
• Experience with heating systems, hot/cold water and associated pipework.
• Approved apprenticeship or equivalent relevant industry experience.
• Full valid UK driving licence.
• Willingness to participate in an out-of-hours/on-call rota.

Desirable Qualifications

• Level 3 relevant qualification.
• 18th Edition electrical qualification.
• PASMA.
• IPAF.
• Additional electrical knowledge or qualifications.
• Experience with oil-fired systems and heat pumps.

Additional Requirement

The successful candidate will be required to complete an Enhanced DBS check prior to appointment.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will be a qualified Commercial Gas Engineer with strong experience in commercial heating and combustion systems. You should be confident working independently on both planned and reactive maintenance, diagnosing faults, completing repairs and ensuring all work meets the required safety and compliance standards.

This role would suit an experienced Commercial Gas Engineer, Commercial Heating Engineer or Commercial Gas & Heating Engineer looking for a hands-on role within a local authority Facilities Management environment.
