SP Energy Networks (SPEN) will be delivering over £10 bn of investment in the GB electricity grid over the next 5 years. A significant proportion of this investment is associated with both Eastern Green Link 1 (EGL1) and Eastern Green Link 4 (EGL4) which are both high voltage direct current (HVDC) links between Scotland and England. EGL1 links Torness (Scotland) and Hawthorn Pit (England), and EGL4 links Westfield (Scotland) and Walpole (England). Both projects are being delivered in partnership with National Grid Energy Networks and will enable the transmission of up to 4GW of electricity, enough to power over 4milion homes.
The Commercial and Contract Manager roles will work as part of a skilled multi-disciplinary contract and commercial (C&C) team to deliver these multi billion pound projects. There are currently 2 positions, with 1 being dedicated to EGL1 and the other dedicated to EGL4. Each Contract and Commercial Manager will be responsible for the and control the main contractual interface with the principal contractors, interfacing with Delivery, Engineering, SHES, Finance, legal and Commercial workstreams, along with interfacing into directorates within SPEN and NGET.
The positions may require frequent travel to various locations in the UK and occasional travel within Europe. The individual should be prepared to manage teams working at different project locations.
What you'll be doing
Lead areas of contract and commercial management & implementation (in conjunction with Quantity Surveyors, Legal representatives and Project Managers)
Establish healthy contractual and commercial relationships with contractors and advise on alternative forms of contract and procurement arrangements. Provide commercial input to the procurement team in order to develop and deliver clear strategies.
Contract awareness and ability to readily liaise with legal experts.
Preparation of formal contract communications and handling of claims/disputes
Liaise and support the PMO team to ensure timely and clear reporting throughout the business
Support the development, maintenance, and oversight of the wider HVDC pipeline.
Deliver effective stakeholder management of the HVDC EPC Contractors through the development, implementation, and monitoring of KPI's and contractual arrangements to ensure continuous improvement.
Identification of lessons learned and required improvements as well as implementation of these at the front end of the process - requires the establishment and maintenance of close links with Section/Department Heads to drive necessary improvements.
Provide contract management expertise/guidance to Business users and expertise/guidance to QS's.
Influence Project Managers and the commercial and contract team to continuously improve the focus and management of contractual matters.
With the Project team, undertake monthly project reviews identifying mitigation of any potential commercial risks/disputes.
Identification of project workload requirements & coordination of resources.
Collaborate with EGL1 Management Team including Director to review and implement decisions associated with all commercial and contractual escalated matters.
What you'll bring
Construction contract experience of major infrastructure delivery
Legal experience or close experience of working with legal experts. Being able to act as a bridge between legal and project management is essential
Experience in claims/dispute management
Degree in relevant discipline, or equivalent experience
Contract management / Contractor relationship management experience (in EPC type contract ideally FIDIC Silver Book).
Proven experience of line managing QS/commercial/contract teams in a high value project/portfolio environment.
Experience of implementing strong governance, control and risk management frameworks for contract and framework management.
Experience of developing and managing Supply Chain
Strong influencing skills when working with external and internal parties.
Strong interpersonal skills given requirement to interface with multiple stakeholders and external contractors.
Proven verbal and written communication skills.
Proven analytical and decision-making skills.
PC knowledge of Microsoft applications.
Knowledge of the regulatory framework applicable to electricity networks.
