Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience

Permanent Position | Precision Machining | Small Batch & Bespoke Work | Career Development

About the Company

If you are an engineer who enjoys machining something different rather than producing the same component repeatedly, this could be a role worth considering.

Our client is a specialist precision engineering business where technical ability and craftsmanship are highly valued. The company produces complex components and specialist tooling for demanding customers, with an emphasis on accuracy, consistency and getting things right.

It is a close-knit and friendly engineering environment where experienced machinists are trusted to use their knowledge. There is also scope for someone who wants to broaden their skills, take on more responsibility and ultimately progress within the business.

The Role

We are looking for an experienced CNC Miller Programmer Setter Operator who is equally comfortable at the programming stage as they are at the machine.

The work is predominantly small batch and specialist machining, so this is a position for someone who enjoys variety and is confident making decisions about how a component should be produced.

You will be responsible for taking jobs from drawing through to completed component, including programming, setting, proving and machining. There will be plenty of opportunity to use your existing knowledge rather than simply running pre-written programmes.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Programming, setting and operating CNC milling machines.
  • Producing specialist and low-volume precision components.
  • Developing and modifying programmes to suit individual jobs.
  • Carrying out programming both at the machine and offline.
  • Working with FANUC controls.
  • Selecting suitable tooling, workholding and machining strategies.
  • Setting datums, offsets and tooling accurately.
  • Safely proving programmes and making adjustments where necessary.
  • Reading and interpreting engineering drawings and technical specifications.
  • Working to close dimensional tolerances and demanding quality standards.
  • Inspecting components throughout the machining process.
  • Identifying and resolving machining or programming issues.
  • Making informed decisions around feeds, speeds, tooling and machining methods.
  • Working closely with colleagues to ensure jobs are completed efficiently and to specification.
About You

This role will suit an experienced CNC Miller who is confident enough to take ownership of a job rather than needing every stage of the process dictated to them.

You should have a strong background in CNC milling, programming, setting and operating, ideally gained within a precision or specialist engineering environment.

The nature of the work means you will need to be comfortable moving between different components and machining requirements. Experience of small-batch or bespoke production is particularly important.

Essential experience:
  • Extensive CNC milling experience.
  • Proven ability to programme, set and operate CNC milling machinery.
  • FANUC controls experience - essential.
  • Experience of programming for small-batch and varied production.
  • Strong engineering drawing and specification interpretation.
  • Good understanding of tooling and machining techniques.
  • Ability to work accurately to tight tolerances.
  • A confident approach to setting and proving programmes.
  • Strong problem-solving ability and a practical engineering mindset.
The following would be advantageous:
  • Experience of offline CAD/CAM programming.
  • Experience machining complex or technically demanding components.
  • Experience with specialist tooling or one-off components.
  • Experience across different CNC milling platforms and controls.
  • An interest in developing into a more senior or technically responsible position.
Key Attributes

The successful candidate is likely to be someone who takes pride in being a good engineer.

  • Confident in your own technical ability.
  • Comfortable working with minimal supervision.
  • Naturally inquisitive and interested in finding the best way to manufacture a component.
  • Methodical and quality conscious.
  • Able to troubleshoot problems rather than simply report them.
  • Adaptable when moving between different jobs and materials.
  • Reliable and willing to support the wider engineering team.
  • Keen to continue developing your skills and take your career further.
Benefits
  • Permanent position
  • Monday - Friday day shift
  • Specialist and varied machining work
  • Small-batch and bespoke components
  • Friendly, supportive engineering environment
  • Opportunity to develop your technical skills
  • Genuine potential for career progression
  • Opportunity to work alongside experienced and highly skilled engineers
