Job description

Clinical Research Fellow General Surgery

Fixed term from 5th August 2026 for 12 months

Full time - 40 hours per week

Salary Scale - £45,504 - £71,550 per annum

Applications are invited from General Surgery trainees who have completed Core Surgical Training (or equivalent), or those further in their training who want to undertake a period of clinical research.

The successful candidate will conduct innovative research applied to Clinical Surgery. They will be encouraged to register for a higher research degree (MD or PhD) and seek external peer‑reviewed funding to support additional research costs where appropriate.

The fellow will have the opportunity to undertake innovative clinical and translational research projects. Previous fellows have embarked on highly collaborative, multidisciplinary projects focussed on the clinical impact of cachexia and systemic inflammation within surgical patients. Projects have involved components of both clinical and laboratory research, centred within the University of Edinburgh.

In parallel with research projects, the post‑holder will undertake clinical duties in Forth Valley Royal Hospital and contribute to the resident on call general surgical rota at registrar level. Forth Valley Royal Hospital provides acute services covering general surgery (including breast and vascular surgery), trauma and orthopaedics, urology, ENT, OMFS and ophthalmology.

You can look forward to a warm welcome and strong support from colleagues both in Forth Valley Royal Hospital and Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. The appointment will be on a fixed term and full‑time basis (40 hrs) and remuneration will be determined by the pay and conditions of hospital medical and dental staff (NHS Circular: PCS (DD) 2024/01).
