Job summary
This clinical leader role involves coordinating staff and activities on a dynamic and ever-evolving Day Surgery Unit. Currently, Day Surgery staff work across three units within Westmorland General Hospital. This position is well suited for enthusiastic, motivated nurses wishing to work within a welcoming team.
Day Surgery activities include caring for a range of patients pre- and post-surgery from various specialties: Trauma & Orthopaedics, General, Maxillofacial, Dental, ENT, Gynaecology, Chronic Pain, Urology, and Ophthalmology.
We also assist medical staff with clinics for patients undergoing procedures such as prostate biopsies, cystoscopies, nipple tattooing, one-stop clinics, and chronic pain clinics. Day Surgery staff also run nurse-led urology clinics, including Trial without Catheter Clinics and Bladder Treatment Clinics.
Main duties of the job
- Act as an effective role model with responsibility for managing the wards alongside and in the absence of the Ward Manager.
- Assist the Ward Manager with recruitment, staff selection, and duty roster management.
- Develop and implement policies, and seek opportunities to develop services.
- Coordinate the delivery of high-quality patient care, ensuring cleanliness and safety standards.
- Lead in the professional development and performance management of staff in conjunction with the Ward Manager.
- Participate in trust appraisal and development reviews, and lead educational and training programmes.
- Act as a Bleep holder for Westmorland General Hospital site.

We operate from three main hospitals: Furness General Hospital in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary, and Westmorland General Hospital in Kendal, along with several community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.
Furness General Hospital and the Royal Lancaster Infirmary provide a range of services including Emergency Departments, Critical and Coronary Care units, and various Consultant-led services.
Westmorland General Hospital offers general hospital services, an Urgent Treatment Centre, and helps manage non-life-threatening conditions such as minor injuries and illnesses.
All three hospitals provide outpatient, diagnostic, therapeutic, day case, and inpatient surgeries, along with community outreach services and diagnostics across Morecambe Bay.

Person Specification
Essential- Minimum 3 years experience as a first-level RGN
- Evidence of teaching/mentoring staff
- Self-motivated, enthusiastic, flexible, with excellent communication skills
- Assertive, calm, and objective under pressure
- Commitment to CPD of self and others
Desirable- Post-registration management/leadership experience
- Minimum 2 years surgical experience
