Job summary

Connex Education is seeking Mental Health Support Workers to join partner schools across Stoke-on-Trent. You will provide 1:1 and small-group support for pupils facing SEMH challenges, helping them engage with learning and regulate emotions in a caring, structured environment.

Experience in education, care, or support work is valued, and successful candidates will have a DBS Update Service or be willing to apply.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs in school/care/youth work.
  • Confidence in managing challenging behaviour and using de-escalation strategies.
  • Patient, empathetic and emotionally resilient with a calm approach.
  • Support pupils on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, academically and emotionally.

Responsibilities

  • Provide tailored, therapeutic support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Assist pupils in developing coping strategies and emotional regulation.
  • Collaborate with school staff to implement individual support plans.
  • Maintain accurate notes on pupil progress and wellbeing.

Salary: £90 – £120 per day (depending on hours and experience)

About the Role

Connex Education is recruiting Mental Health Support Workers to work in partnership with schools across Stoke-on-Trent. This is a fantastic opportunity for individuals with experience in education, care, or support work who are passionate about making a positive difference in the lives of young people facing social, emotional, and behavioural challenges.

The Schools

Partner schools support pupils with a range of SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) needs and create nurturing, structured environments where all children are encouraged to thrive. Staff work collaboratively to provide tailored, therapeutic approaches to learning, helping pupils build confidence, resilience, and essential life skills.

These schools are seeking empathetic, resilient, and committed individuals ready to provide consistent and compassionate support to pupils who may display challenging behaviour or require emotional regulation strategies.

What You’ll Need
  • Experience working with children or young people with SEMH needs in a school, care, youth work, or similar setting
  • Confidence in managing challenging behaviour and using de-escalation strategies effectively
  • Patient, empathetic, and emotionally resilient with a calm and consistent approach
  • Comfortable supporting pupils on a 1:1 basis or in small groups, providing both academic and emotional support
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with pupils who may have experienced trauma or disrupted education
  • Flexible and adaptable, able to respond to changing needs throughout the day
  • DBS on the Update Service or willingness to apply through Connex Education
  • Proof of right to work in the UK (required to apply)
