Job summary

Quantum Scholars is seeking a dedicated Behaviour Support Mentor in Wokingham to support a young person with SEMH needs across school and home settings. Qualifications

• Experience supporting children or young people with challenging behaviour.
• Experience working with SEND and/or SEMH needs.
• Experience providing one-to-one support in a school, alternative provision, mentoring, youth work or similar setting.
• A calm, patient and consistent approach when managing challenging situations.
• Confidence using positive behaviour support and de-escalation strategies.
• Understanding of the importance of clear boundaries, routines and consistent expectations.
• Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
• Good understanding of emotional regulation and the factors that can contribute to challenging behaviour.
• Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to remain professional and composed when faced with difficult or unpredictable behaviour.
• Flexible and adaptable approach to supporting the individual needs of the young person.
• Ability to work collaboratively with parents/carers, school staff and other professionals.
• Reliable and consistent approach.
• Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

Responsibilities

• Providing one-to-one behaviour and emotional support to the young person.
• Supporting the young person within the school environment and at home.
• Building a strong, positive and trusting relationship based on consistency and clear boundaries.
• Supporting emotional regulation and helping the young person recognise and manage their emotions.
• Identifying triggers and potential barriers that may contribute to challenging behaviour.
• Using appropriate strategies to de-escalate situations and reduce challenging behaviour.
• Supporting the young person to develop positive coping strategies.
• Encouraging positive behaviour, engagement and participation in education.
• Providing reassurance and helping the young person manage frustration, anxiety or difficult situations.
• Establishing clear and consistent routines and expectations.
• Encouraging responsibility, independence and positive decision-making.
• Supporting the young person to develop their confidence and social skills.
• Reinforcing positive behaviours and celebrating progress.
• Helping the young person develop strategies that can be used both at school and at home.
• Communicating effectively with parents/carers, school staff and other professionals involved in the young person's support.
• Monitoring behaviour and providing appropriate feedback on progress and any concerns.
