Job description

A leading multidisciplinary civil and structural engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a Bridge Engineer to join its growing bridges team in Leeds.

This is an excellent opportunity for a bridge engineer with assessment, inspection or design industry experience looking to work on a diverse portfolio of major UK and Irish infrastructure projects, spanning the design, assessment, inspection, strengthening and refurbishment of both new and existing structures.

You’ll work alongside experienced Senior and Principal Engineers, gaining exposure to technically challenging projects while receiving strong support towards Chartered Engineer status and long-term career progression.

The Projects

The team is currently delivering an exciting range of bridge and infrastructure projects across the UK and Ireland, including major highway, rail and existing-asset schemes.

Recent and ongoing work includes:

  • Major long-span and complex bridge structures – supporting the monitoring, assessment and management of existing assets, including bearings and other critical structural components.
  • New safety and protection structures – providing client-side technical support, reviewing contractor designs and assisting with the delivery of new structures associated with major bridge assets.
  • Specialist structural analysis – undertaking wind engineering analysis and other technically challenging assessments associated with bridge structures.
  • Major Design & Build schemes – working alongside leading UK contractors on multi-million-pound bridge replacement and structural renewal projects.
  • Major Irish transport infrastructure programmes – delivering bridge and civil structures commissions associated with significant rail and commuter transport investment.
  • New and existing bridge schemes – providing opportunities to work across design, assessment, strengthening, refurbishment and asset management.

With a strong pipeline of work, there is plenty of opportunity to gain experience across new-build bridges, existing structures, assessment, strengthening, refurbishment and asset management.

The Role

As a Bridge Engineer, you will play an important role in the technical delivery of bridge and civil structures projects from early feasibility through to detailed design, construction and completion.

You will work as part of multidisciplinary project teams and will have increasing opportunities to take ownership of packages of work, engage directly with clients and contractors, and develop towards project leadership responsibilities.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting the design and technical delivery of bridge and civil structures projects.
  • Undertaking structural analysis, calculations and design assessments.
  • Developing structural models and interpreting analysis results.
  • Producing and coordinating engineering drawings and technical information.
  • Contributing to feasibility studies, optioneering and scheme development.
  • Undertaking site inspections and supporting bridge assessments where required.
  • Preparing technical reports, specifications and contract documentation.
  • Supporting construction-stage activities and responding to technical queries.
  • Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver projects to programme and budget.
  • Attending client, contractor and stakeholder meetings.
  • Supporting and mentoring graduate engineers as your experience develops.
  • Contributing to technical innovation and the continued development of the bridges team.
  • Degree qualified in Civil or Structural Engineering, or equivalent.
  • Around 3+ years’ relevant experience in bridge engineering or civil structures.
  • Experience in the design and/or assessment of bridge structures.
  • Good knowledge of UK bridge design standards, codes and engineering principles.
  • Experience working through key design stages, from concept/feasibility through to detailed design.
  • Experience with structural analysis and design software.
  • Strong technical, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail and a structured approach to engineering.
  • Ability to manage your own workload and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status through ICE or IStructE, or a clear commitment to achieving Chartership.

Experience in one or more of the following would be advantageous:

  • Major highway or rail infrastructure projects.
  • Existing bridge assessment, inspection and monitoring.
  • Bridge strengthening, repair and refurbishment.
  • Bridge bearings and structural movement systems.
  • Wind engineering or other specialist structural analysis.
  • Working on Design & Build or other contractor-led projects.
  • Client-facing experience.
  • Site experience and construction support.
  • Asset management or inspection frameworks.
  • Knowledge of relevant contract procedures and industry standards.
  • Experience working across multidisciplinary infrastructure sectors, including highways, rail, water or geotechnical engineering.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Bridge Engineer looking to develop technically, broaden their project experience and progress towards a Senior Engineer position.

You will benefit from:

  • Full support towards ICE or IStructE Chartership.
  • Mentoring from experienced Senior and Principal Engineers.
  • Exposure to major UK and Irish infrastructure projects.
  • Opportunities to work across both new and existing structures.
