Job summary

Astute People is seeking a Plant Manager to oversee two anaerobic digestion sites in the York area. You will lead operations across both sites, optimise digestion processes and ensure regulatory compliance. The role requires coordinating feedstock, maintenance, and a proactive approach to safety and performance with regular travel between sites.

The ideal candidate will have WAMITAB, IOSH or willingness to obtain, and a relevant engineering qualification. A Full UK Driving Licence is essential.

Responsibilities

• Oversee two site operations to maximise uptime and efficiency.
• Monitor and optimise biological performance of digestion process.
• Coordinate feedstock deliveries, storage and blending for consistent digester performance.
• Manage digestate storage, handling and export per regulations and customer requirements.
• Own operational and financial performance including budgeting, cash flow, P&L, reporting and cost control.
• Ensure accurate record keeping of biogas, CHP, biomethane, heat and digestate outputs.
• Be on-call rota and occasional weekend work.
• Act as primary site lead for Environmental Permit compliance (EA) and PAS110 Accreditation.
• Lead, motivate and develop on-site operations team including operators, technicians, and contractors.
• Oversee planned preventive maintenance with Field Engineering Team and contractors.

Job description

Astute's Renewables team is partnered with established anaerobic digestion business who own and operate a portfolio of biogas plants across England and Scotland. They're looking to recruit a Plant Manager to oversee two of their sites across the York area.

Responsibilities and duties of the Plant Manager role

Reporting to the General Manager you will:

• Oversee all plant operations across both sites to ensure maximum uptime and efficiency.
• Monitor and optimise biological performance of the digestion process.
• Coordinate feedstock deliveries, storage, and blending to maintain consistent digester performance.
• Manage digestate storage, handling, and export in compliance with regulations and customer requirements.
• Take ownership of operational and financial performance, including budgeting, cash flow forecasting, profit and loss reviews, reporting, feedstock procurement and cost control
• Ensure accurate record keeping of plant outputs including biogas, CHP electrical generation, biomethane, heat, and digestate
• Be part of an on-call rota along with weekend work when required
• Act as the primary site lead for the plant's Environmental Permit, ensuring full compliance with EA requirements.
• Act as the primary site lead for the plant's PAS110 Accreditation, ensuring full compliance with standards
• Lead, motivate, and develop the onsite operations team, including operators, technicians, and contractors
• Oversee the planned preventive maintenance (PPM) schedule in partnership with Field Engineering Team and external contractors.
• Other duties as required

Professional qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following:

• WAMITAB is essential
• IOSH or willingness to obtain through company supported training
• A relevant Engineering qualification is desirable but not essential
• Full UK Driving Licence

The Plant Manager role would suit someone who is:

• Demonstrable experience leading operational teams in a process, waste, utilities or renewable energy environment.
• Proactive problem-solving skills with a hands-on approach to operational challenges.
• Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, including engagement with regulators, contractors, suppliers and investors.
• Commitment to health, safety, environmental and quality standards.
• A willingness to travel regularly between sites, with occasional overnight stays as required.
