Job summary

Protocol Education in Bristol is seeking dedicated ASD Support Assistants to join school teams from October.

These roles involve supporting pupils with autism to access learning, develop communication skills, build confidence and navigate the school day successfully. For many children with ASD, consistent routines and patient support are key to development.

Qualifications

  • Experience working with children or young people with ASD or additional needs.
  • Patient, emotionally resilient and able to build positive relationships.
  • Comfort with varying communication methods and routines.
  • Desirable knowledge of PECS or Makaton.

Responsibilities

  • Support pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder throughout the school day.
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support tailored to individual needs.
  • Help pupils engage with learning and classroom activities.

Protocol Education is working closely with specialist and mainstream schools across Bristol that are seeking dedicated and compassionate ASD Support Assistants to join their teams from October.

These rewarding roles involve supporting pupils with autism to access learning, develop communication skills, build confidence and navigate the school day successfully. For many children with ASD, consistent routines, positive relationships and patient support are key to their development, making this a role where your impact will be felt every single day.

Whether you already have experience supporting children with autism or have developed transferable skills through care, support work, youth work, mentoring or education, we'd love to hear from you.

The Role

As an ASD Support Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils with Autism Spectrum Disorder throughout the school day
  • Provide 1:1 and small-group support tailored to individual needs
  • Help pupils engage with learning and classroom activities
  • Support communication, social interaction and emotional regulation
  • Work closely with teachers, SENCOs and specialist staff
  • Assist with structured routines and transitions throughout the day
  • Implement personalised support strategies and EHCP targets
  • Create a positive, nurturing and inclusive learning environment
What We're Looking For

This role would suit someone who:

  • Has experience working with children or young people with ASD, SEND or additional needs
  • Is patient, understanding and emotionally resilient
  • Can build strong, positive relationships with pupils
  • Understands the importance of routine, consistency and clear communication
  • Is confident supporting children with varying communication and learning needs
  • Has experience with PECS, Makaton or autism-specific strategies (desirable but not essential)
  • Is passionate about helping children reach their full potential

What We Need to Clear You
  • Passport or proof of right to work in the UK
  • Two proofs of address
  • CV covering the last 10 years of work or education, with any explained gaps
  • References covering the last 2 years (including childcare references where applicable)
  • Overseas police check if you have lived abroad for 3 months or more in the past 5 years

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
