Job summary

Veolia Group in Rugby, Warwickshire, is seeking an Assistant Manager to support site operations and safety, overseeing day-to-day activities and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The role involves supervising the operations team, managing waste processing, and coordinating with regulators and stakeholders on site activities.

The ideal candidate will have landfill or waste treatment experience, strong H&S knowledge, budgeting ability, and a technical mindset.

Qualifications

• Experience in landfill or waste treatment operations is essential.
• Strong knowledge of health & safety standards and regulatory requirements.
• Ability to manage budgets and control costs.
• Experience with operating and maintaining processing equipment and plant.
• Desirable technical competence or related degree.

Responsibilities

• Support the Facilities Manager in day-to-day site operations and safety.
• Line management of the operational team, ensuring training and compliance.
• Oversee waste reception, processing, and disposal operations; maintain equipment.
• Ensure regulatory compliance and maintain relationships with authorities and stakeholders.
• Complete daily site records, data analysis, and project delivery within delegated authority.

What you'll be doing:

• Site Operations & Safety Management - Assist the Facilities Manager in managing day-to‑day site activities, ensuring all staff, visitors, and contractors follow site rules and safety requirements while developing a proactive safety culture.


• Team Leadership & People Management - Act as line manager for the operational team, providing supervision, direction, and support; ensure employees and contractors are properly trained, inducted, and monitored to maintain required standards.


• Waste Processing & Plant Management - Control waste reception, acceptance, processing, and disposal operations; manage maintenance of mobile plant and processing equipment to optimize performance and meet budget requirements.


• Regulatory Compliance & Stakeholder Relations - Ensure compliance with all site authorizations and procedures; manage relationships with regulatory authorities (EA/HSE), local councils, and other stakeholders; facilitate regulatory visits and maintain accurate records.


• Operational Administration & Project Delivery - Complete daily site records and data analysis; manage contractors undertaking maintenance and works; deliver business‑specific projects; provide customer service and ensure efficient facility operation within delegated authority levels.

What we're looking for:

• Essential Landfill and/or waste Treatment processing experience in an Operational setting


• Knowledge and experience in H&S


• Knowledge of budget and cost control


• Understanding of Operational Plant Maintenance


• Desirable Technical Competence (degree or equivalent)
