Job summary

Hastings Hotels, a family-owned Northern Ireland group, seeks an Assistant Bars Manager to lead the Observatory restaurant bar team and deliver Hastings standards. You will train staff, manage shifts including weekends, and ensure excellent guest service across a busy hotel bar.

Qualifications

Responsibilities

  • Manage and motivate employees through effective communication, training and development, in accordance with company policies and relevant employment legislation.
  • Lead the team in the absence of the Beverage Manager to ensure efficient bar operation.
  • Maintain bar stocks and display goods to a high standard.
  • Prepare and dispense drinks with high presentation standards.
  • Ensure staff are knowledgeable about hotel facilities and proactively promote services to guests.
  • Assist guests with any reasonable hotel service requests.
  • Respond to complaints and provide appropriate solutions.
  • Keep bar areas and equipment clean and in line with Hastings standards.
  • Process beverage payments and record sales accurately.
  • Use bar equipment efficiently to minimise wastage.
  • Foster a harmonious working environment with respect and dignity for all staff.
  • Maintain stock security and report breaches.
  • Contribute to annual budgets and cost-control plans.
  • Ensure Hastings quality standards are understood and reviewed regularly.
  • Adhere to cash handling, stock control and ordering policies.
  • Provide training and development to staff for excellent service.
  • Comply with health, safety, hygiene and licensing policies.
  • Collaborate with other departments and suppliers to ensure guest satisfaction.
  • Maintain bar area and equipment in Hastings standards.
  • Maintain a safe environment in line with legislation and policies.
  • Keep knowledge up-to-date about industry trends and competitor activity.
  • Assist with recruitment and scheduling to optimise staff usage.
  • Ensure compliance with licensing laws and other regulations.
  • Carry out Duty Manager duties as required.
  • Any other duties as required by Management.

Assistant Bars Manager

Hastings Hotels is a family owned, luxury hotel group based in Northern Ireland.

Supported by our inspiring General Manager, Jake McHugh, you will provide leadership to our food and beverage team, ensuring the smooth day-to-day management of our busy Observatory restaurant. We want to help you to develop your skills and offer an extensive range of learning and development opportunities.

The successful candidate will have worked in a busy bar environment and be able to lead, motivate and support your team members to achieve success. You can expect to work 35 hours per week (excluding breaks), five shifts out seven including weekends. As Assistant Beverage Manager you will have a fully flexible approach as working patterns will include days, evenings, nights and weekends as required.

The salary for this full-time position is £27,250 per annum.

About the role
  • To manage and motivate employees through effective communication, training and development, in accordance with company policies and relevant employment legislation, ensuring HR procedures are followed.

  • To take responsibility for the effective leadership of the team in the absence of the Beverage Manager, to ensure the efficient operation of the bars and the delivery of Hastings product and service standards.

  • To ensure bar stocks are fully maintained and that goods and products are properly displayed to a high standard.

  • To prepare and dispense drinks as requested by guests, maintaining high standards of presentation

  • To ensure the team are knowledgeable about the facilities and services within the hotel and are proactive in the sale of these to guests.

  • To ensure you and the team assist guests with any reasonable request for hotel services.

  • To ensure you and the team respond to complaints and find the appropriate solution.

  • To ensure that the bar, customer areas and equipment are maintained in a clean and tidy manner in accordance with Hastings standards.

  • To receive payments for beverages sold and record drinks and goods sold to guests in residence, in accordance with operating procedures.

  • To use equipment and bar pumps efficiently, to maintain proper measures and ensure minimum wastage.

  • To promote and contribute to a harmonious working environment where all staff are treated with respect and dignity.

  • To maintain the security of stock areas at all times, immediately reporting any breaches.

  • To contribute to and agree annual budgets, putting in place appropriate mechanisms to effectively manage costs and all factors relating to the profitable performance of the bar, ensuring appropriate plans are created, agreed, communicated, implemented and reviewed.

  • To ensure Hastings quality standards and procedures are fully understood, implemented and regularly reviewed, and that formal and informal feedback is used to ensure continual improvement.

  • To ensure company policies relating to cash handling, stock control and stock ordering are implemented and monitored, taking appropriate action to resolve problems.

  • To ensure the team receive appropriate training, coaching and development to provide effective and efficient service in line with Hastings standards.

  • To comply with all health, safety, hygiene and licensing policies and procedures.

  • To maintain effective communication and relationships with other hotel departments, suppliers and agencies to maintain an effective operation and ensure guest satisfaction.

  • To ensure the bar area, fixtures and equipment are properly maintained and presented to Hastings standards.

  • To ensure a safe environment is maintained in compliance with health, safety, fire, hygiene and security legislation and company policies and procedures.

  • To seek and continuously develop knowledge relating to the industry sector and competitor activity, to provide input into future plans and activities, and so maintain and enhance market position.

  • To assist with the recruitment, selection and utilisation of bar employees to achieve the optimum use of employee resource in line with business peaks and troughs.

  • To ensure the hotel's compliance with all matters relating to licensing laws, Customs and Excise Regulations and all other relevant legislation.

  • To carry out Duty Manager duties as required.

  • Any other duties as required by Management.

Required Criteria
  • Educated to GCSE standard or the equivalent with grades A-C in English and Maths
  • Excellent communication and good numeracy skills
  • Must have strong operational and bar management experience along with a good awareness of cash handling, stock control, stock ordering and budgeting
  • Must have experience in preparing rosters and wage forecasting
  • Right to Work in the United Kingdom
  • Must have previous bar supervisory experience
