Job description

Are you interested in technology, enjoy solving problems and like helping people?

This is a great opportunity to start your career in IT while gaining hands-on experience within a busy and varied digital environment

About the opportunity

"City of Bristol College" offers courses from pre-entry through to university level across its centres in Bristol. You will join the College's ICT User Support Team, helping staff and students get the most from the technology they use every day.

Alongside your role, you will work towards a Level 3 Digital Support Technician Apprenticeship, combining practical workplace experience with recognised training and support.

You do not need to know everything about IT already. We are looking for someone with a genuine interest in technology who is curious, helpful and ready to learn.

What will you be doing?

No two days will be exactly the same. You will develop your technical and customer service skills while supporting a wide range of users and technology.

Your role will include:

  • Providing first-line IT support to staff and students

  • Helping to identify and resolve IT problems and service requests

  • Setting up desktops, laptops, tablets and mobile devices

  • Supporting user accounts, including password resets and account changes

  • Helping with technology in classrooms and meeting rooms, including interactive displays, AV equipment and printers

  • Supporting Microsoft 365 applications including Outlook, Teams, OneDrive and SharePoint

  • Learning how to use device management technology such as Microsoft Intune and Autopilot

  • Installing and configuring software applications

  • Helping to maintain accurate records of IT equipment and assets

  • Recording work and updates on the ICT service desk system

  • Working with experienced colleagues and escalating more complex problems when needed

  • Getting involved in ICT projects and technology rollouts

  • Occasionally supporting other College locations when required

  • Following College requirements around safeguarding, information security, GDPR and health and safety

  • Completing your apprenticeship training and applying what you learn in your day-to-day role

What are we looking for?

We are not expecting you to arrive as an IT expert. Your attitude, enthusiasm and willingness to develop are really important.

You could be a great fit if:

  • You have a genuine interest in IT and technology

  • You enjoy working out how things work and solving problems

  • You are friendly and approachable and enjoy helping others

  • You can communicate clearly with different people

  • You are organised and pay attention to detail

  • You enjoy working as part of a team

  • You are willing to learn new systems, technology and ways of working

  • You can remain calm and professional when dealing with a problem

  • You have some familiarity with Microsoft Windows and applications such as Word, Excel and Outlook

It would be great if you also had these skills, but do not worry if you have not had the opportunity to develop them yet:

  • Experience of troubleshooting basic computer or technology issues

  • An awareness of Microsoft 365

  • Some knowledge of computer hardware, networking or mobile devices

  • Previous experience of working with or helping customers

This experience could have come from school, college, a part-time job, volunteering, a hobby or simply from being the person friends and family turn to when their technology is not working!

What will you gain?

This apprenticeship is an opportunity to build both technical skills and valuable workplace experience.

You will:

  • Work towards a Level 3 Digital Support Technician Apprenticeship

  • Gain practical experience within a busy ICT support environment

  • Develop skills in troubleshooting, hardware, software and Microsoft 365

  • Learn from experienced ICT professionals

  • Build valuable communication and customer service skills

  • Gain experience supporting a wide range of users

  • Have opportunities to contribute to real IT projects and technology rollouts

  • Develop transferable skills that can support your future career in IT and digital technology

The apprenticeship also aligns with the Register of IT Technicians at Level 3.

Why City of Bristol College?

You will be joining an organisation focused on learning and development, so your own learning will be an important part of the role.

You will work within a supportive ICT team where you can ask questions, learn from experienced colleagues and gradually build your confidence and technical knowledge.

It is an excellent first step for someone who wants to turn an interest in technology into a career.

Your apprenticeship with SWAC

As a SWAC apprentice, you will be employed by the "South West Apprenticeship Company (SWAC)" and complete your day-to-day role with City of Bristol College. SWAC is a government-approved Flexi-Job Apprenticeship Agency and provides ongoing employment, mentoring, welfare and pastoral support to apprentices throughout their apprenticeship.

You will therefore have support from both your workplace team and SWAC as you develop in your role and work towards completing your apprenticeship.
