Job summary
Protocol Education are recruiting for a 1:1 SEND Support Assistant to join a specialist school in Ferryhill, supporting a pupil with Autism and complex additional needs. This hands-on role requires calmness, consistency and patience to help the pupil access learning and manage the school day.
You would provide dedicated 1:1 support, assist with transitions, and help manage sensory overload and anxiety within a supportive setting.
Qualifications
- Experience supporting children or adults with Autism.
- Experience within a SEND, SEMH, care or education setting.
- A Psychology or related degree.
- Experience in mentoring, youth work or behaviour support.
- A calm and patient approach.
- Confidence supporting someone through challenging moments.
- A genuine interest in understanding behaviour rather than simply reacting to it.
- Psychology graduates are particularly encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
- Supporting the pupil during lessons and classroom activities
- Helping them manage sensory overload
- Supporting transitions between activities and different areas of school
- Providing reassurance during periods of anxiety or dysregulation
- Using clear routines and boundaries
- Supporting emotional regulation
- Encouraging communication and independence
- Following agreed behaviour and support strategies
- Working alongside teachers and SEND staff
