City of Natchez is seeking a full-time Sweeper Operator with a Class A CDL to maintain streets and infrastructure. The role involves operating a street sweeper, performing daily checks, and performing related heavy manual labor in various weather and traffic conditions.

The ideal candidate has a high school diploma and some street maintenance experience, with leadership exposure preferred. Benefits include health and retirement options, and the Municipal department offers a stable public works

Responsabilités

TITLE: SWEEPER OPERATOR / CDL

EFFECTIVE DATE: 8/11/2026

EMPLOYMENT STATUS: FULL TIME, REGULAR

DEPARTMENT: PUBLIC WORKS

REPORTS TO: PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR

SALARY RANGE: $17.00 per hour

PRINCIPAL PURPOSE OF JOB: To maintain the infrastructure and aesthetics of the City of Natchez, providing a good quality of life for the citizens.

SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: The position of Sweeper Operator is skilled work in the operation of heavy equipment. Work is performed according to established procedures with frequent inspections during the process and upon completion of assignments. The street sweeper is operated in various weather conditions; and responsible individual will be required to operate sweeper both day and night in all types of traffic conditions with both low and high average daily traffic counts. The Sweeper Operator is required to perform routine maintenance on equipment operated and engage in related physical labor as needed. Incumbents will perform other skilled/semi-skilled/unskilled tasks that may be related to equipment operation as assigned.

Essential Job Functions
  • Performs equipment and machinery maintenance and operations with little or no supervision.
  • Performs physical task involved in construction, maintenance, and repair of streets and highways, buildings and other structures or facilities.
  • Clean and maintain streets by removing debris, trash, leaves and other accumulations and contaminants.
  • Safely operate and drive the street sweeper in accordance with all cities, state and federal guidelines.
  • Effectively communicate with supervisor and mechanics.
  • Disposal of dirt and debris that is generated by the sweeper.
  • Wear proper personal safety equipment.
  • Perform daily equipment inspections and maintenance.
Other Duties
  • Engage in other related physical labor activities as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma and some experience in street maintenance, or other operations applicable to work assignments; including, some lead-worker experience or any combination which is acceptable to the hiring authority.

Licensing and Certifications
  • Class "A" Commercial Driver's License
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, And ABILITIES
  • Considerable knowledge and skill in the operating characteristics of assigned equipment.
  • Considerable knowledge of the work hazards and applicable safety precautions associated with assigned equipment.
  • Must be free of chemical dependencies.
  • Ability to secure and maintain the applicable vehicle operator's license.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain routine work records and reports.
  • Ability and stamina to lift heavy articles.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual work for extended periods under varying climatic conditions.
I.physical Requirements
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and vibration. The employee is required to work in precarious traffic conditions and is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles.
  • The employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms.
  • The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear.
  • The employee is required to walk, sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, smell and visibly see the streets to inspect work while performing the task.
  • The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distant vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • The employee must be able to work in an environment with a loud noise level.
