City of Natchez is seeking a part-time Grounds Maintenance / Custodial Worker to perform groundskeeping and custodial tasks at parks and recreation facilities. The role includes pruning, weeding, mulching, planting, lawn care, and restroom sanitation, with duties spanning indoor and outdoor environments year-round.

The incumbent will operate a range of tools and light equipment, assist with playground maintenance, and support minor repairs as needed.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of grounds maintenance, lawn care, landscaping, and/or custodial experience.
  • Valid Mississippi or Louisiana driver’s license.
  • Lift and move 75 pounds safely.
  • Physically able to work outside year-round.
  • Must operate a variety of machines and tools including mower, edger, chain saw, etc.

Responsabilités

  • Performs general groundskeeping duties with primary emphasis on pruning limbs, weeding, mulching, planting and watering flowers, and removal of fallen limbs and branches.
  • Maintains landscaped areas through regular weeding, mulching, trimming, and general gardening tasks.
  • Performs daily custodial and janitorial duties for recreational facilities and buildings, including restroom cleaning and sanitation.
  • Details and maintains playground areas, including mulching, cleaning, and safety inspections.
  • Performs tasks related to grounds and park maintenance (mowing, edging, irrigation, seed/sod, fence repair, weed control).
  • Performs minor services and repairs to maintain park facilities (construction, electrical/plumbing, masonry, carpentry, painting).
  • Provides manual labor such as digging holes, raking, lifting.
  • Operates and maintains equipment (truck/trailer, tractor, edger, tiller, aerator, chain saw).
  • Receives and completes forms, work orders, reports, and other documents.
  • Prepares setup for events.
  • Other duties as prescribed by the Director of Parks and Recreation.

Part Time Grounds Maintenance / Custodial Worker

DEFINITION

The purpose of this job is to perform skilled and manual work functions related to the maintenance of parks, recreational facilities, and grounds for the Parks & Recreation Department. Duties and responsibilities include general groundskeeping with a primary focus on pruning limbs, pulling weeds, mulching flower beds, planting and watering flowers, removal of fallen limbs and branches, daily custodial maintenance of facilities (including cleaning bathrooms), playground detailing, and performing a variety of tasks in the operation and maintenance of the department. Employees in this class are under general supervision.

EQUIPMENT / JOB LOCATION

The employee will use a variety of hand tools and small machinery such as pruning tools, loppers, chain saw, mower, edger, tiller, mulching equipment, pressure washer, etc. The employee will be required to work indoors and outdoors, year-round in all types of weather conditions. The employee may occasionally be required to work in high places. The employee may be required to work weekend rotations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs general groundskeeping duties with primary emphasis on pruning limbs, pulling weeds, mulching flower beds, planting and watering flowers, and removal of fallen limbs and branches.
  • Maintains landscaped areas through regular weeding, mulching, trimming, and general gardening tasks.
  • Performs daily custodial and janitorial duties for recreational facilities and buildings, including routine restroom cleaning and sanitizing, trash disposal, and general facility cleaning.
  • Details and maintains playground areas, including mulching, cleaning, and safety inspections.
  • Performs tasks related to grounds and park maintenance (e.g., mowing, edging, irrigation system operation/maintenance, laying seed/sod, fence repair, weed control applications, etc.).
  • Performs minor services and repairs as needed to maintain park facilities (e.g., minor construction projects; minor electrical/plumbing repairs; masonry; carpentry; painting; etc.).
  • Provides manual labor functions as directed (e.g., digging holes/trenches; raking; hoeing; lifting; etc.).
  • Operates and maintains equipment and machinery used in grounds and park facilities maintenance (truck/trailer; tractor; edger; tiller; aerator; chain saw; etc.).
  • Receives and completes various forms, work orders, reports, and other documents.
  • Prepares setup for a variety of events.
  • Other duties as prescribed by the Director of Parks and Recreation.

  • Supervises seasonal help as needed.
  • Performs related maintenance and cleaning tasks as assigned.

Required Knowledge And Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of general groundskeeping practices, including pruning limbs, weeding, mulching, planting and watering flowers, and removal of fallen limbs and branches.
  • Knowledge of effective methods of custodial maintenance, with emphasis on restroom cleaning and facility sanitation.
  • Knowledge of playground maintenance and detailing.
  • Knowledge of basic irrigation procedures.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
  • Ability to perform basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work and the knowledge to use necessary tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform janitorial and custodial skills for the maintenance of recreational facilities and grounds.
  • Ability to work efficiently at heights of 16 feet.
  • Ability to operate a variety of light motorized equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions

  • Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
  • One year of grounds maintenance, lawn care, landscaping, and/or custodial experience.
  • Possession of a valid Mississippi or Louisiana driver’s license.
  • Lift and move 75 pounds safely and properly.
  • Physically able to work outside year-round.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment which includes a computer, calculator, telephone, motor vehicle, sprayer, mower, edger, chain saw, hand tools, carpentry tools, mechanic tools, lawn tools, etc.
  • Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects/materials. Must be able to exert more than seventy-five pounds occasionally, and/or more than fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.

ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
