Proton is hiring for a Foundation Team backend role. You will design and build shared libraries and internal services used across Proton products, focusing on PHP with opportunities to use Rust for performance-critical components.

You will shape APIs, design boundaries, and collaborate across teams to ensure scalable, secure, and well-documented software. You will work in a large, open, mono-repo environment, advocating for good architectural choices, writing RFCs, and driving adoption of

Qualifications

• 5+ years building and operating backend systems in production with a focus on PHP.
• Working knowledge of Rust or ability to learn quickly.
• Genuine taste in API design with strong opinions on naming, defaults and error handling.
• Experience with codebase scale architecture and monorepos.
• Experience evolving shared code without breaking dependents.
• Security-minded approach to prevent abstraction misuse.
• Ability to drive internal library adoption across teams.

Responsabilités

• Design and build shared libraries, framework layers, and internal services used across Proton products.
• Turn recurring patterns into good abstractions.
• Write documentation and examples that developers actually use and treat adoption as part of shipping.
• Improve day-to-day development: build times, local dev setup, test ergonomics, and debuggability.
• Work openly with product teams — RFCs, design reviews, and occasional PRs across repos.
• Collaborate with other developers to integrate libraries into applications.
