School Crossing Guard

Reports To: Support Services Supervisor/Police Chief

Scope of Responsibility: Crossing Guards are responsible for the safety of school children going to and returning from school at an assigned location. The work involves traffic control, supervising any person in crossing streets or highways all with the emphasis on safety.

Essential Job Functions

• Monitor traffic flow to locate safe gaps through which pedestrians/vehicles can cross streets.
• Monitor access or flow of people to prevent problems.
• Direct or escort pedestrians across streets, stopping traffic as necessary.
• Direct vehicle traffic.
• Assist motorists or pedestrians.
• Direct traffic movement or warn of hazards, using signs, flags, lanterns, and hand signals.
• Guide or control vehicular or pedestrian traffic at assigned location.
• Communicate traffic and crossing rules and other information to students and adults when necessary.
• Report unsafe behavior of children/parents to school officials.
• Discuss performance, complaints, or violations with supervisors.
• Distribute traffic control signs and markers at designated points.
• Discuss traffic routing plans and control point locations with school officials when needed.
• Record license numbers of vehicles disregarding traffic signals, and report infractions to appropriate authorities.
• Communicate situation details to school officials.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED.

Physical Requirements

Able to stand for a period of time.
