Custodial / Grounds Maintenance Worker
Definition

The purpose of this job is to perform skilled and manual work functions related to the custodial maintenance and general upkeep of parks, recreational facilities, and grounds for the Parks & Recreation Department. Duties and responsibilities include daily custodial work with a primary focus on cleaning bathrooms, mopping floors, inspecting and maintaining play areas (including replacing mulch under play equipment), picking up litter, and performing general groundskeeping tasks. Employees in this class are under general supervision.

Equipment / Job Location

The employee will use a variety of hand tools, cleaning equipment, and small machinery such as pressure washer, mops, brooms, vacuums, pruning tools, mulching equipment, mower, edger, etc. The employee will be required to work indoors and outdoors, year-round in all types of weather conditions. The employee may occasionally be required to work in high places and may be required to work weekend rotations.

Essential Functions
  • Performs daily custodial and janitorial duties across all recreational facilities and buildings, including thorough cleaning and sanitizing of bathrooms, mopping floors, trash removal, and general facility cleaning.
  • Conducts daily inspections of play areas, replaces mulch under play equipment as needed, and ensures playgrounds are safe and clean.
  • Picks up litter and debris throughout park grounds and facilities on a daily basis.
  • Performs general groundskeeping duties including pruning limbs, pulling weeds, mulching flower beds, and basic landscaping maintenance.
  • Maintains landscaped areas through weeding, mulching, and general gardening tasks as needed.
  • Performs tasks related to grounds and park maintenance (e.g., mowing, edging, irrigation system checks, fence repair, etc.).
  • Performs minor services and repairs as needed to maintain park facilities (e.g., minor plumbing repairs, painting, cleaning restrooms and work areas, etc.).
  • Provides manual labor functions as directed (e.g., digging, raking, lifting, etc.).
  • Operates and maintains equipment and machinery used in custodial and grounds maintenance (truck/trailer, pressure washer, mower, edger, chain saw, etc.).
  • Receives and completes various forms, work orders, reports, and other documents.
  • Prepares setup for a variety of events.
  • Other duties as prescribed by the Director and/or Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation.

  • Supervises seasonal help as needed.
  • Performs related maintenance and cleaning tasks as assigned.
Required Knowledge And Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of custodial and janitorial practices, with emphasis on daily bathroom cleaning, floor mopping, and facility sanitation.
  • Knowledge of playground inspection, maintenance, and mulch replacement procedures.
  • Knowledge of litter control and daily grounds cleaning methods.
  • Knowledge of general groundskeeping practices, including basic pruning, weeding, and mulching.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with the public and other employees.
  • Ability to evaluate situations and make decisions.
  • Ability to perform basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical work and the knowledge to use necessary tools and equipment.
  • Ability to perform high‑quality janitorial and custodial work for recreational facilities and grounds.
  • Ability to work efficiently at heights of 16 feet.
  • Ability to operate a variety of light motorized equipment.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Minimum Training and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
  • Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
  • One year of custodial, janitorial, grounds maintenance, or landscaping experience.
  • Possession of a valid Mississippi or Louisiana driver’s license.
  • Lift and move 75 pounds safely and properly.
  • Physically able to work outside year‑round.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines, tools, and equipment which includes a computer, calculator, telephone, motor vehicle, sprayer, mower, edger, chain saw, hand tools, cleaning equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to use body members to work, move or carry objects/materials. Must be able to exert in excess of seventy‑five pounds occasionally, and/or in excess of fifty pounds of force frequently. Physical demand requirements are at levels of those for very heavy work.
Environmental Factors

Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, or toxic agents.
