The City of Fredericksburg is seeking applications for a Parks Crew Worker I. Under administrative direction of the Parks Maintenance Superintendent, this position performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance duties in the upkeep of City-owned parks and facilities. Essential job duties: grounds maintenance work, maintain and repair Parks buildings and facilities, operate and maintain a variety of equipment, ensure cleanliness and sanitation standards are maintained within park facilities, and other duties as assigned. This position is scheduled to work 40 hours per week and will include Tuesdays thru Saturdays from 12:00 pm to 8:30 pm with some holiday work required. Flexibility is required based on events and operational needs. The successful candidate must be a self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Starting pay is $21/hour. Benefits include paid time off, retirement, paid holidays and group health insurance.
Essential Job Functions
- Must be able to work independently, without supervision and possess leadership skills.
- Performs grounds maintenance work, including mowing, trimming, thatching, aerating.
- Plants, transplants, and maintains trees, shrubs and flowers.
- Waters, fertilizes and applies pesticides to lawns and athletic fields.
- Repairs plumbing issues in the parks system.
- Repairs electrical issues in the parks system.
- Assists with construction projects from fencing to shade structures, etc.
- Builds and maintains trails and trail system
- Installs, maintains, repairs and troubleshoots irrigation systems.
- Maintains and repairs parks buildings and facilities.
- Operates and maintains a variety of equipment such as tractors, lawn mowers, weed eaters, hand tools, power tools, etc.
- Purchases supplies necessary for job performance as needed.
- Ensures cleanliness and sanitation standards are maintained within park facilities.
- Responsible for conducting required preventive maintenance work on assigned vehicles.
- Responds positively to questions or concerns during daily interactions with city citizens and tourists.
- Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays. Many shifts are noon to 9 and will include working independently.
- Performs related work as assigned and/or required.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: High school diploma/ or equivalent. CDL encouraged Pesticide/Herbicide Applicator license encouraged Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of equipment and irrigation operations.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials and tools used in park maintenance and repair work, including the care of bushes, shrubs, trees and grass areas.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
- Knowledge of good organizations skills to ensure that work is approached systematically, effectively and efficiently in order to attain desired results.
- General knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions in English.
- Ability to acquire sufficient skill in using tools and equipment used for the various tasks and functions described above.
- Ability to properly apply fertilizers and pesticides in the maintenance of lawn and other landscaped areas.
- Ability to prepare athletic fields for league and tournament play as well as for everyday use.
- Ability to work under adverse weather conditions.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy loads.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and other city employees.
- Must be able to assist and work during emergency situations.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service during daily interactions with the public including city citizens and tourists.

- Work is performed primarily outdoors and may require extended periods of standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, climbing, and working in adverse weather conditions.
- The position requires sufficient strength, mobility, coordination, and endurance to perform manual labor; operate tools, equipment, swim, lift objects of 100 lbs. without assistance.
- This position may involve exposure to chemical fumes, airborne particles, and noise. Employees must be able to work safely in these conditions and follow all required safety procedures and wear personal protective equipment (PPE).
- This position requires the ability to listen and communicate effectively in English over the phone, email or text.
