IXO is seeking scientific judgments that connect calculations to the physical behavior they claim to explain. This remote, flexible engagement focuses on AMO physics, atomic polarizability, and ytterbium isotopes, with emphasis on transparent reasoning and defensible conclusions.

You will deliver technically supported assessments and worked explanations, with a commitment of 5–10 hours per week, remote working worldwide. The scope and rate will be agreed before work begins.

Qualifications

• Master's or PhD in AMO/optical physics or equivalent experience.
• Hands-on configuration-interaction and ab initio calculations focusing on polarizability and Yb structure.
• Ability to explain sigma/pi transitions and communicate reasoning clearly in writing and discussion.

Responsabilités

• Examine ab initio CI approaches for atomic polarizability; explain assumptions and interpretation.
• Review atomic-structure reasoning for Yb-171 and Yb-174; distinguish isotope issues from method errors.

IXO is seeking scientific judgments that connect a calculation to the physical behavior it claims to explain. Work in this track centers on AMO physics and optical material properties, with detailed attention to atomic polarizability and the structure of ytterbium isotopes.

Work you will do

• Examine ab initio configuration-interaction approaches used to estimate atomic polarizability, explaining the assumptions and the physical interpretation of the result.
• Review atomic-structure reasoning for Yb-171 and Yb-174 and distinguish isotope-specific issues from general methodological errors.
• Analyze sigma and pi transitions in atomic spectra and explain why the relevant transition or polarization assignment is appropriate.
• Provide clear scientific critiques and worked explanations, using only research examples that you are permitted to share.

Preferred background

• Master's, PhD or equivalent AMO/optical-properties research experience.
• Hands-on configuration-interaction and ab initio atomic calculations, particularly polarizability and ytterbium structure.
• Ability to explain sigma/pi transitions accurately and communicate scientific reasoning in both writing and discussion.

Deliverables

Technically supported assessments, corrected explanations and transparent statements of any unresolved assumptions.

Location and schedule

Fully remote; worldwide applications are welcome. Indicative availability is 5–10 or more hours a week, with flexible timing. IXO will agree the actual scope and schedule before work.

Pay and working terms

• $105
• $210/hr USD
