Job summary

Sandvik AB in Turku is seeking a Senior Power Unit Engineer to lead the power unit systems for underground mining machines at our Turku site. You will define the architecture, oversee emissions compliance, and collaborate with suppliers to deliver reliable power unit solutions.

Job description

Are you an experienced power unit engineer who wants to shape the technical direction of internal combustion engine systems for underground mining machines? Do you enjoy solving complex technical challenges, working closely with suppliers and turning legislation, operating conditions and product requirements into reliable technical solutions? The Senior Power Unit Engineer position is located at Sandvik's Turku site, the main product development and manufacturing center for our Load and Haul equipment. You will work with power units and their auxiliary systems for mobile machines operating in demanding underground mining environments. The role is full-time and permanent.

About the job

As a Senior Power Unit Engineer, you will join the Powertrain Technology team within the Product Offering organization and act as a key technical authority for power unit systems within our Load and Haul products. You will have overall technical responsibility for power unit systems, including internal combustion engines and associated auxiliary components. You will define technical solutions, ensure compliance with internal standards and external requirements, and co-develop engine variants with suppliers to meet the environmental and operational demands of underground mining. You will also help shape the long-term technology strategy, contribute to technology roadmaps and mentor other engineers through technical leadership and reviews.

Your work includes the following

• Own the power unit system definition, technical architecture and overall technical responsibility for power units, auxiliary systems and related components throughout the product lifecycle.
• Develop power unit solutions together with suppliers, ensuring performance, emissions compliance, safety, efficiency and reliability in demanding underground operating conditions.
• Lead validation, testing and complex problem-solving activities, using analysis and test results to drive corrective actions and continuous product improvements.
• Collaborate across engineering disciplines, suppliers and customers, including occasional travel to customer sites and field locations to gain firsthand insight into machine operation, support technical investigations, validate solutions and identify opportunities for continuous product improvement.
• Drive the future of power unit technology by evaluating emerging technologies, contributing to technology roadmaps, and mentoring other engineers through technical reviews and guidance.

Your background

• Suitable degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Energy Technology or another relevant engineering discipline.
• Extensive experience in power unit, engine or powertrain engineering for mobile equipment, with a proven track record of developing system-level solutions.
• Strong system-level understanding of internal combustion engine applications and their integration into demanding machine environments.
• Proven ability to lead technical discussions, collaborate with suppliers and solve complex engineering challenges.
• Strong analytical and decision-making skills, with the ability to balance technical, regulatory and business requirements.
• Collaborative mindset and willingness to support and mentor other engineers.
• Fluent communication skills in both Finnish and English.
• Willingness to travel occasionally.

Beneficial but not required

• Experience with underground mining machinery, off-road mobile equipment or other demanding industrial applications.
• Knowledge of engine applications, power unit subsystems, engine control systems, CAN communication, emissions legislation, functional safety or product compliance.
• Experience in technical leadership roles, simulation-based development, or data-driven engineering methods.
