Job description

Are you an experienced testing and simulation professional interested in developing advanced test environments for embedded control systems? Do you enjoy working close to hardware while also taking ownership of how testing and simulation capabilities should evolve in the future?

If the answer is yes, keep reading - this may be the right opportunity for you.

We are searching for an experienced Lead SW Test Lab Engineer to join our Software organization and take a key role in developing our testing laboratories and simulation environments. This is not a traditional software testing position. Instead, you will work hands-on with physical equipment, embedded systems, and simulators while taking broader ownership of the capabilities, capacity and future development of our testing environments.

You will become part of our SW Testing team, supporting the development of control systems for Sandvik underground loaders and trucks. Your work will help us increase verification in earlier development phases and make better use of simulation throughout software development.

The position is full-time and the contract is permanent. You will work at Sandvik's Turku site, which is the main product development and manufacturing center for our Load and Haul equipment. Due to the hands‑on nature of the role, working with physical equipment and laboratory environments, the position is primarily on‑site. Some travel to Tampere is expected.

Your role - Software Test Lab Engineer

As Software Test Lab Engineer, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance and long‑term development of our test and simulation environments. The environment includes approximately 30 simulators and different technical solutions, ranging from Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems to more virtual Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) environments.

Your key responsibilities include

  • Manage, maintain and develop testing laboratories and simulation environments used in control system development.
  • Develop our simulation capabilities to enable more extensive verification earlier in the software development lifecycle.
  • Take ownership of the overall testing environment, including capacity, utilization, development needs and related investment and budget considerations.
  • Collaborate actively with different stakeholders, identify their testing and simulation needs, and introduce new models and simulation capabilities into the environments.
  • Develop laboratory practices and participate in model verification, ensuring that simulations accurately represent real system behavior.
  • Contribute to the long‑term development of our testing and simulation strategy and evaluate new technologies and approaches for future environments.

Your background and what we find important

We are looking for an experienced, Lead‑level technical professional who is comfortable taking broad ownership of complex testing environments. You do not need to be familiar with every technology from day one, but you should have a strong technical foundation, a willingness to learn, and the motivation to develop our overall testing and simulation capabilities.

We hope you have:

  • Strong experience in software testing, testing methodologies, and technical test environments.
  • Experience working with embedded systems and hardware‑related software development or testing.
  • Experience with testing laboratories, simulation environments, HIL systems, or other complex technical environments.
  • The ability and willingness to work hands‑on with physical devices, hardware interfaces, and software components.
  • A systematic and structured way of working, combined with strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, as well as the seniority to take ownership and drive development across different stakeholder groups.
  • Knowledge of electrical engineering fundamentals is desirable to support work with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) systems, including configuring and troubleshooting I/O interfaces.
  • Experience in Windows environment administration is preferred, as maintaining and configuring simulation platforms involve managing complex system and configuration file structures.

Experience with CAN communication, Python, MATLAB, or Simulink are considered an advantage. Relevant experience may come from industries such as automotive, mobile machinery, industrial automation, or other environments involving embedded systems and machine control.

Fluent English is required, while Finnish proficiency is considered an advantage.

What's in it for you?

We offer you an opportunity to work in a technically diverse environment where software, hardware and real‑world machinery come together. Instead of working only with abstract software systems, you will see how testing and software development ultimately translate into the behavior of physical machines - and have opportunities to see and test those machines in practice.

You will have significant ownership of an important technical environment and the opportunity to influence how Sandvik's testing and simulation capabilities evolve in the coming years. You will work with experienced colleagues in a collaborative team where new technologies, including the possibilities offered by AI, are actively explored.

In addition, we offer you interesting tasks in our modern, continuously evolving and international product development environment, as well as opportunities to develop your professional skills and career.

Our culture - do we share the same mission?

Our role is clear - through every action, every day, we make the shift and advance the world through engineering. We believe in an inclusive, equal and open‑minded culture, and we nurture our diversities to form a solid foundation for achieving great results.

Our values - Curiosity, Responsibility, Customer Focus and Winning Together - guide the way we work. In addition, we can offer you fair and rewarding benefits as well as many different career opportunities.
