Job summary

Sandvik is looking for a self-driven R&D Product Safety Engineer to join the Automation BU in Tampere, Finland, to advance AutoMine product safety. You will focus on functional safety and product safety for development and customer projects, turning safety requirements into practical work.

Based in Tampere, you will work with R&D teams and product owners to manage risk assessments, safety concepts, verification evidence and regulatory compliance, including CE marking and evolving EU rules.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in engineering is required.
• Experience with functional safety, product safety or machinery safety is preferred.
• Familiarity with CE marking and EU safety regulations is advantageous.
• Strong English communication, proactive and collaborative.

Business Unit Automation is the home of AutoMine® - the world-leading solution for autonomous mining - and Newtrax – the world leader in collision avoidance and operations management solutions for underground mining – and Universal Field Robots UFR, a fast-growing Australia-based provider of autonomous interoperable solutions for the surface mining and underground mining markets.

We are now looking for a self-driven and collaborative R&D Product Safety Engineer to join Business Unit Automation and support our AutoMine® product family. In this role, you will be at the heart of making our automation solutions safe, reliable and compliant. You will focus especially on functional safety and product safety, supporting both product development and customer project teams, and helping turn safety requirements, standards and regulations into practical daily work. The position is based in Tampere, Finland at our home office in Tulli Business Park located in the city center.

Your role

Will have a strong focus on functional safety and product safety in automation development projects. You will work closely with R&D teams, technical product owners and customer projects to make sure safety requirements are understood, planned and implemented in practice. Your work will include supporting risk assessments, safety concepts, functional safety activities, safety documentation, technical files and verification evidence. You will also help our teams understand how relevant safety regulations and standards apply to our products, including machinery safety regulation and future digital product requirements such as the Cyber Resilience Act. You will cooperate with our common Product Compliance organization covering product safety, cybersecurity, sustainability and compliance. This is a great opportunity to grow as a functional safety and product safety specialist while contributing to safer and more sustainable mine automation.

Your key responsibilities and qualifications

• You bring experience, or strong motivation to grow, in functional safety, product safety, automation, machinery safety or autonomous industrial equipment.
• You support R&D technical product owners and customer projects by bringing functional safety and product safety expertise into everyday development work, from risk assessments and safety concepts to documentation and verification.
• You understand, or are eager to learn, how functional safety standards, machinery safety regulations, CE marking requirements and emerging EU regulations such as the Cyber Resilience Act influence product development, testing and documentation.
• You actively follow functional safety, product safety and product compliance topics, and enjoy helping others understand what they mean in practical product development.

Your Profile

You have a relevant technical education, for example a bachelor’s or master’s degree in engineering, and a solid technical background. You may already have experience in functional safety, product safety, automation or machinery safety, or you may be a motivated engineer who wants to develop deeper specialist expertise in these areas. Experience with mining, software-intensive products, technical documentation, CE marking, safety lifecycle activities or product compliance is considered an advantage. Knowledge of Secure Development Lifecycle practices or cybersecurity-related product regulation, such as the EU Cyber Resilience Act, is also beneficial. Most importantly, you are curious, systematic and motivated to help build automation products that are safe, compliant and ready for the future.

You enjoy working with different teams and stakeholders and can build strong professional relationships across functions. You communicate clearly in English, both verbally and in writing; Finnish and other languages are considered an advantage. You work proactively, systematically, and independently in a fast-changing business environment, and you are motivated to learn, take ownership, and get things done even within tight timeframes.
