Job summary

Helsinki Shipyard is seeking a Propulsion System Responsible Designer for the 40-member Machinery Design Department. The role covers propulsion system interfaces, coordination with hull structures, piping, and remote control systems, and oversight of design choices across the project lifecycle.

You will work from Helsinki with potential hybrid options, collaborating with suppliers and production teams to deliver integrated propulsion solutions and technical documentation.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant field of Engineering.
• Strong problem-solving skills are a must.
• Experience in ship propulsion is highly appreciated.
• Experience in ship structural integration, automation, power electrics, pressurized oil lubrication, and mechatronics is beneficial.
• The ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment is essential.
• A good command of English, both written and spoken, is required.

Responsibilities

• Propulsion systems and their related interfaces as a systems responsible designer in ship projects.
• Oversee interfaces with hull structures and foundations, piping systems, remote control systems, and other connected ship systems.
• Participate in selection and development of propulsion solutions and coordinate propulsion interfaces throughout the design process.
• Create system arrangements, interface definitions, piping diagrams, and technical documentation during basic design and support equipment procurement.
• Prepare test and commissioning programs and support production as a technical specialist.
• Coordinate and integrate propulsion equipment interfaces with hull structures, foundations, piping, and remote control systems.

We are now looking for a Propulsion System Responsible Designer for the 40-member Machinery Design Department. The Machinery Design Department is responsible for the system design, equipment procurement, and detailed design of ship propulsion machinery and related systems.

In this role, you will be responsible for:

• Propulsion systems and their related interfaces as a systems responsible designer in ship projects.
• Your responsibilities will cover interfaces with hull structures and foundations, piping systems, remote control systems, and other connected ship systems.
• You will oversee the economical, regulatory, technical, and qualitative design choices related to these systems throughout the entire project.
• Your role includes participation in the selection and development of propulsion solutions for ship concepts, as well as the technical coordination of propulsion systems and their interfaces throughout the design process.
• You will create system arrangements, interface definitions, piping diagrams, and technical documentation during the basic design phase, develop technical solutions and components, and provide technical support for the procurement of equipment specified in your designs.
• You will also prepare test and commissioning programs and support the production team as a technical specialist, ensuring that propulsion equipment and its interfaces with hull structures, foundations, piping, remote control, and other systems are properly coordinated and integrated.

A typical workday includes design and interface coordination, communication with suppliers, resolving technical solutions together with other designers and production specialists, and participating in the development of engineering practices and processes.

To succeed in this role:

• You have a Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant field of Engineering.
• Strong problem-solving skills are a must.
• Experience in the field of ship propulsion is highly appreciated, though not mandatory. Ideally, you have experience in a similar role at a shipyard or with a propulsion system supplier.
• Experience in ship structural integration, automation, power electrics, pressurized oil lubrication, and mechatronics is beneficial.
• The ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment is essential.
• A good command of English, both written and spoken, is required.
