Job description

Do you want to help electrify some of the most advanced passenger vessels and polar ships in the world? At Helsinki Shipyard, we design and build tailor‑made, high‑class vessels — including icebreakers that operate in the most extreme marine environments on Earth.

Our history stretches back to 1865, and since November 2023, we’ve been part of the Canadian Davie Group, strengthening our impact on the global stage.

We’re always looking for motivated and skilled professionals to join our Electrical & Automation Design team.

About The Team

Our Electrical & Automation Design department covers a wide scope of systems, such as:

  • Power distribution (low voltage, propulsion)
  • Lighting systems
  • Navigation and external communications
  • Internal communication and camera systems
  • Security and entertainment systems

The team currently consists of ~20 specialists, and we collaborate closely with all other design, production, and commissioning units across the shipyard. We handle projects from basic to detail design, and support everything from supplier selection to factory testing and commissioning.

You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary design organization of ~120 people, and a wider shipyard community of ~400 professionals.

What Could Your Role Include?

Depending on your background and interests, you might work with:

  • Low Voltage distribution systems (e.g. transformers, converters, distribution boards)
  • System responsibility for lighting, cameras, navigation, or comms
  • Creating design documentation: layouts, wiring diagrams, component specs
  • Participating in supplier selection and tender preparation
  • Supporting testing and commissioning
  • Managing system data in ERM and other databases

The role and scope will be tailored based on your experience and interests.

Who Are We Looking For?

We’re open to applications from experienced electrical designers as well as early‑career professionals with strong motivation. Ideally, you:

  • Have a basic understanding of IP Networking and design of IP networks. Designing IP based systems in shipbuilding projects and marine industry experience will be considered beneficial. Examples of the systems: Wi‑Fi, IPTV, Automatic telephone system, Cisco UCM or equivalent, General data network, Talk‑back telephone system etc.
  • Know your way around tools like AutoCAD and MS Visio
  • Are familiar with classification rules and technical documentation
  • Are comfortable working independently and collaboratively
  • Communicate well in English (written and spoken)
  • Shipbuilding experience is appreciated — but a learning mindset and proactive approach are even more valuable.
What Do We Offer?

End‑to‑end ownership – from concept to commissioning

A role where your design is physically realized just outside your window

A tight‑knit, supportive team where your input makes a difference

Hybrid work model – based in Helsinki, Turku or Pori, with flexibility

A central location in Hietalahti, Helsinki, with rich shipbuilding heritage

A sustainability‑driven workplace — we contribute to Helsinki’s joint sea monitoring program

“The ship project takes from 2–3 years, and you can literally see the completion of the ship from plans to the finished ship ready for her maiden voyage outside one’s own window. It’s always a moving moment when a ship leaves for her home port.” — Mohamed Elameen, Ship Theory Engineer

Additional Requirements

As part of the selection process, candidates chosen for the role will undergo a routine medical check, which includes a drug test. For certain roles, a security clearance may also be required.

Basic understanding of IP Networking and design of IP networks, Proficiency in AutoCAD, Proficiency in MS Visio, Familiarity with classification rules and technical documentation, Ability to work independently and collaboratively, Strong written and spoken English communication skills.
