Overview on the Research Area: While conventional communication systems rely on electromagnetic waves, in Molecular Communication (MC), information is encoded into the properties of small particles. This allows communication between nodes with sizes in the order of nano- and micrometers. Thus, engineered MC systems are expected to enable communication between nanomachines and facilitate interaction with biological systems.
One of the most fascinating envisioned applications of MC is the Internet of BioNanoThings (IoBNT). So far, the Internet of Things (IoT) has marked an important step towards digitalization, as it enables the autonomous information exchange between multiple devices. This advance also sparked a previous evolution of health care systems, e.g., the emergence of wearable and implantable health monitoring devices connected to the Internet. The next revolutionary but logical step to advance personalized health care even further is the extension of the IoT to the inside of the human body. This idea spawned the concept of the IoBNT, facilitating detection and treatment of diseases inside the human body based on an in-body network of nanodevices and an external control unit. The in-body network includes synthetic and biological sensors and actuators in the cardiovascular system to detect biomarkers and provide localized and personalized treatment. The technical feasibility of the IoBNT requires the deployment of an MC network inside the body, a gateway between the inner and the outer network, and suitable communication protocols.
Project Description: The research projects aim the development of communication concepts for the IoBNT. This includes the communication between synthetic or natural nanodevices communicating inside the body as well as their communication with external control units. In particular, the research projects are focused on the development of suitable signaling schemes for transmitters and receivers, channel models and simulation algorithms targeting specific use cases such as biomarker detection and targeted drug delivery. Additionally, the research projects are closely aligned with experimental research in collaboration with projects partners from different disciplines including chemistry and medicine. During the research project, the researchers will contribute to different European and German projects on MC and IoBNT, and will work in an interdisciplinary research team.
Qualification Profile: Master Degree in Electrical Engineering with specialization in Communications, Medical Engineering or a related field. Strong interest in interdisciplinary research.
