Parsons is seeking an Environmental Scientist/Forester for a position based at the U.S. Army Garrison Grafenwoehr Training Area (GTA), Bavaria, Germany. This full-time position is part of a team of environmental professionals from across Europe and the US who ensure that lands are maintained and improved for long-term sustainability. The role is on-site at the Grafenwoehr Military Training Area, Germany with work focusing on Poland and Polish training lands. To meet background screening requirements for access to IT networks, the applicant must be resident in Germany for at least 12 months prior to the start date.

What You’ll Be Doing
  • Independently perform field data collection to assess land use and land cover including vegetation cover, hydrologic measurements, erosion and sedimentation, and trail / open land assessments.
  • Identify remote sensing techniques to increase efficiency in data collection.
  • Acquire data (in field and remotely) and analyze information to assess the capability and maximize the sustainability of lands for military training.
  • Liaise with military land stakeholders such as the US Army, Polish Army, Polish Forestry Authorities and other US and Polish environmental authorities.
  • Identify and map rehabilitation projects and monitor project success.
  • Compile and analyze a variety of data and prepare technical reports and documents.
  • Develop environmental Geospatial Information System (GIS) data layers.
  • Conduct environmental education and outreach through briefings, posters, and events.
What Required Skills You’ll Bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry or a related field such as environmental science or commensurate work experience working on environmental, sustainability, or land management projects.
  • Experience of GIS concepts, applications, and standards, including with ESRI ArcGIS Pro, Portal for ArcGIS, and Web Mapping Services (WMS).
  • Experience with remote sensing, surveying, and other land assessment techniques, applications, and standards.
  • Experience coordinating with and briefing small and large groups.
  • General knowledge of cartography concepts, terminology, and standards, including U.S. DoD and NATO mapping standards.
  • General knowledge of data management concepts, terminology, and security standards (preferably relating to U.S. DoD IT systems).
  • General computer skills, i.e. word processor, e-mail, spreadsheets, etc.
Additional Requirements
  • Fluent English, written and spoken.
  • Ability to perform monitoring tasks outdoors on uneven terrain and in inclement weather on an active military training installation.
  • Ability to travel within Europe and the United States.
  • Valid & Clean EU (Class B) Driving License
  • Clean Police Certificate of Good Conduct (Führungszeugnis) issued by Germany.
  • Eligibility to work in the EU.
  • Ability to travel away from primary work location on various assignments for a week at a time (totaling approximately 3 to 4 times per year).
What Desired Skills You’ll Bring
  • Experience using Global Positioning Systems (GPS).
  • Experience working with LiDAR, remote sensing data, and use of drones for data collection.
  • Knowledge of European environmental regulations and compliance.
  • Familiarity with the US Army Sustainable Range Program.
  • Understanding of U.S. DoD and NATO data, GIS, and mapping standards.
  • Experience coordinating and briefing U.S. DoD military personnel, Government employees, and international stakeholders.
  • Polish language skills, written and spoken.
