About us
CALIMA is a Berlin-based B2B SaaS startup whose mission is to make workplace safety simpler, more reliable, and more effective through digital and innovative solutions. Our software helps companies ensure that employees working alone receive assistance quickly in an emergency. CALIMA is used by over a thousand companies and protects thousands of employees every day.
We are a small, ambitious team with high standards for quality. We take a pragmatic, product-focused approach and have short decision-making chains. We’re looking for people who take responsibility, contribute ideas, and actively improve our processes.
Your role
As Product Owner, you will be our first full-time employee in product management and will assume operational product responsibility for our development teams: Cloud, mobile apps for iOS and Android, and Platform.
Currently, the backlog, tickets, and planning are managed directly by the Head of Tech. Your role is to ensure that the teams are consistently working on the right things: a well-organized backlog, clearly defined tickets, an effective refinement process, and realistically aligned deadlines. You’ll serve as the link between the Head of Tech, the small, remote development teams, QA, Sales, and Customer Success.
We develop a safety-critical product. For us, reliability and quality take precedence over the number of features.
Looking ahead, you can further develop your role toward strategic product management and actively help shape areas such as the roadmap, market, and product strategy.
Your Responsibilities
Backlog and Tickets
- You'll translate requirements from Customer Success, Sales, and Support into epics and tickets and resolve any open questions.
- You maintain a prioritized backlog for each team and ensure that only clearly defined tickets are sent to development.
- You write tickets that include the goal, acceptance criteria, and scope in such a way that the development and QA teams can get started without needing to ask for clarification.
Concept
- Based on customer feedback and requests from Sales and Customer Success, you determine what the underlying problem is and which improvement will yield the greatest benefit.
- You develop the conceptual framework for features—including the target vision, workflows, and edge cases—before they are turned into tickets.
- You'll work with the developers to evaluate different solutions based on their benefits, effort, and risk.
- You'll work with Customer Success and Sales to talk with customers and review concepts with them before we implement them.
Planning and Control
- You'll work with the Head of Tech to prepare the quarterly plan and strike a balance between capacity and deadlines.
- You'll facilitate Refinements, take over facilitating our team weekly meetings after your onboarding, keep track of action items, and further develop product coordination and the associated processes.
- You keep the boards up to date, identify roadblocks early on, and escalated them to the right person.
Interfaces
- You are the main point of contact for Sales, Customer Service, and QA regarding questions about status and priority.
- You proactively keep Sales and Customer Success informed about the status of a release and any delays.
- You decide what goes into the user manual and customer documentation.
- You'll coordinate our external app developers at the ticket level.
- You provide the content for release notes and team testing.
Your First Few Months
- During your first few weeks, you'll get to know the team, the product, and the customers, and you'll gradually take over the teams' backlog and tickets.
- After that, you'll facilitate refinements and weekly meetings and work with us to establish a planning cycle that makes progress measurable.
- After about three months, you'll be in charge of the day-to-day product work, and the Sales and Customer Success teams will know at all times where a release stands.
What You'll Bring to the Table
- Several years of experience as a product owner, product manager, or technical project manager in software development, ideally in a B2B SaaS or startup environment.
- Proficiency in agile methods, as well as experience in backlog management, prioritization, sprint and release planning, and facilitating agile meetings.
- You write tickets that developers are happy to implement: clear, complete, and with well-defined acceptance criteria.
- Sufficient technical understanding to evaluate the effort involved and proposed solutions; experience with web and mobile products is a plus.
- Experience with ticketing systems such as GitHub Projects, Jira, or similar tools.
- A structured, self-directed approach to work within a remote team and clear communication between the tech and business sides.
- Quality standard: You'd rather remove scope early than have to postpone a release at the last minute.
- Active use of AI tools in day-to-day work, such as for drafting tickets, conducting analyses, and creating documentation.
- Excellent German language skills and good English language skills; our technical documentation is in English.
